It's a little unsettling, but I guess not that surprising. I guess worst case someone will steal my identity, but I have protection in place for that.

A lot of these sites uses public records. You mentioned you were a ham operator, so all they do to get information of family members and other location is back trace all the location you have been to using a very simple background check that just shows if you ever had a felony and addresses you once held then cross reference that to people that lived with you at that time. All you really need for those simple background checks is address, name, and one other information (could be bday, depends on which company).

I got my identity stolen three times already and I’m only 23... but after the first one, I got credit monitoring direct from the big three with report sent to me every month and identity theft protection/alert. Being military, our information including social security is very easy to get hold of.

Now add the fact that neither of those sites are accurate and you have more to think about.

I think hiding your plate number is a preventative measure to not make it easier for thieves to come steal your ditch lights. There's a secondary benefit that by hiding our plate number we can be dicks online and not have to worry about the subject of our dickdom calling in an amber alert on us.

    These are just theories though.

I like my license plate, so I don’t bother covering it up. As a bonus the majority of the revenue for this plate here in Alberta goes towards the ‘Support Our Troops’ program that is managed by the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare services. Plus I like it more than the regular Alberta Plates haha.

Haha...I'm not sure why but I get so mad when I'm flipping through Craigslist or something and somebody is holding their finger up to block their license plate...bugs the crap outta me for some odd reason.

Except it isn't associated with your TW username when you're driving around town. Combine a username, plate number, location info in posts or profiles and now you're starting to build a useful profile of someone. Personally, I'd rather not have that level of interweb visibility.
Legally, not many people can get your info from your plates. In reality, too many bureaucrats, and here's where it starts getting shady, their friends, relatives, etc. can get access. I don't know how much LEO access is monitored, but I expect there is plenty of non-official-use access going on.
Do what you want, I'll err on the side of privacy.

If a criminal is looking for vehicles to break into and steal weapons, which ones do you think they will target?

I have hidden it in the few posts I have made.... not because an actual plate was there, but because I was covering up the hideous advertising that the dealer had temporary until the plates came in. Now that is gone, I won't care anymore. I'm one of those people who hates that crap - "Gabby's Garage, Best in Muscogee! Let Gabby Get It For Ya!" I'd rather listen to Boomer and the Nudge on Fly 95.5 FM!
