License plate format

if you ever have to be back here.. be ready.. and don't even think of dealing with the cops.. you say yes sir/ma'am.. and thank you.. as you take that ticket..
You perspire a little too much and there is a good chance you'll get shot.
And is very understandable.. people here have gotten really stupid weird.. I would hate to be a cop.

 

I just got one issued 2 months ago for my mustang

 

Well. I called the DMV. According to her. The truck comes up as not commercial.
Even do the original registration reads commercial. Now I have to go in and or call Sacramento.

 

I'm curious as to why California still puts a number in front of the 3 letters and numbers on a standard tag. What happens when they get to 9ZZZ999? Why aren't they using 4 letters and 3 numbers? That way it could go from AAAA001 to ZZZZ999. That's a LOT more combinations...

 

Excluding Os and 0s, you still get over 100 million possible tags with the 9ZZZ999 format. Population of CA is about 40 million in 2016, so even if every person (babies and elderly included) had two cars, this is enough for all of them plus wiggle room. Throw into the math the fact that that's just standard tag format, they probably just don't need to switch to a format with more permutations any time soon. If they were really worried about not having enough permutations, why not just use letters for all seven spots?

While waiting for a callback from Sacramento. I decided to call the DMV again.
Now this other lady. Tells me that it does show as commercial. And the extra letter is because of the type of plate.
I'm just gonna leave it at that.

 

my old truck was 9Z99999, new one (i think) is reversed 99999Z9. the legacy plates i think were supposed to follow the original 60s ones ZZZ 999 (might be the 70s blue/ yellow). but i've only seen 6 characters on randomized black/ yellow ones so far.

but i could be wrong. still a bit drunk from the weekend.
