Just wondering what the avg mileage of failure for the A340 is. Mine has had a couple of drain and refills since I’ve owned it but the 200k miles before that well who knows..... still shifts smooth as butter with no issues at the moment. No pan leaks etc.

Just hoping with proper care mine goes another 200k lol

    Dear AustinsDad,

You have to remember when doing your analysis of the life expectancy of your Toyota A340 Automatic Transmission, how long an automatic transmission last depends a great deal on what kind of life it had. An automatic that has been used to tow a great deal, or one that has been abused is not going to live as long as one that has been driven with respect its entire life that has not had to tow.

My friend Bob had a 2003 Tacoma with an automatic transmission, and he had to rebuild it around 280,000 miles.

    Good Luck,
    Paul

Do not know what was done before me but I recently did a drain and fill...doubt the other owner did more than that if he did that.

When I did a radiator replace I had to unhook the lines and the fluid was really dirty. Dark brown. I decided to do 2 drain and refills which only netted about 2 quarts per drain 4 total. I had to add a quart when I got it as well. Fluid looks much cleaner on the stick.

But no issues with it aside a slight lunge forward during cold idles. It seems to engage 1st very quick and bump forward if it is idling fast.

Mine has 258000, still doing fine. Only issue is when really cold out it will hesitate a tad until warmed up. Anyone have any idea why? But then it is great.

Protection for the trans itself I would think. The solenoids don't open or allow flow until the fluid is viscous enough. If you get up to ~2700 rpms it will shift into 3rd tho. Just take it easy for the first 5 minutes and the fluid will do its job.

Yea seems like the computer will hold a gear longer till the engine and trans warm up. Mine won’t shift out till 2500 min. Until it warms up.
