This is more finding a better coping mechanism for depression than it is a drinking problem i think. Like when im in a normal or good mood i feel no need to drink. Which has been a majority of the last 2 weeks. Besides a few breakdowns

I was telling my AA group tonight that moderating was like wrestling a cobra snake. I’d tell myself and others “look! It’s under control” when I should have been questioning why I was holding onto a snake to begin with.

Yep. The number of times I told myself that I'm mentally strong enough to control it is ridiculous. The truth is I am mentally strong enough to control it, but that control comes with a zero tolerance policy. As soon as I have one, no matter how much my brain tells me to stop, I don't. So the obvious solution is to not have one.

Great quote..I'm going to steal that some time.

I still remember the guy who talked to me my first meeting.."you didn't get in trouble every time you drank, but every time you got in trouble I'll guess you were drinking". WOW. Talk about dropping some science.

I’m not telling you what to do by any means. But do you go to meetings and/or have a sponsor to talk to? Learning to deal with life on life’s terms is the key to maintaining sobriety.

I didn't want to come off as harsh, but yes. Failure.

The good news is you can start success RIGHT NOW.

How is everyone’s Sobriety holding up? The meeting on St Patrick’s Day was standing room only haha.

Sounds like a Saturday night meeting that used to be in my area many years ago..irony or not, called Saturday Night Live. Heard you could barely even find a place to stand in this one.

I went to many meetings there as well as 6 years of grade school and the meetings were held in the cafeteria. This would hold about 100 or 125 kids at a time. The Christmas concert held yearly *cringe* was filled every year and I've been told that the Sat night meeting outdid even that.

Sort of been avoiding this thread for awhile but, I dont go to meetings or have a sponser. I have a best friend that I talk to. Don't always tell her everything though. She does know I drink a lot, doesnt know she is part of the reason... I was drinking less but our last very emotional chat did nothing but kickstart my depression again. Talking for me doesnt really help

sometimes a third-party perspective , from a complete stranger helps or if speaking doesn’t work go to meeting and stay quiet, just listen.

My last and humble suggestion, if talking and listening doesn’t work? pick up, AA big book and read.

Try not to avoid things that are meant to help.

Talking to someone that is part of the problem and isn’t there with the goal of helping out seems like a problem. I don’t think that is a good reason to write off talking entirely.

Adding to that, there are numerous studies that show we are only as good as the five closest people to us. If they are not bringing you up then you might want to consider replacing them with someone who will. You get to choose who those people are. Choose wisely. The best ones will ALWAYS be there for you and help you with your goals and struggles. If they are not doing that, then maybe it's time for a change. Not being crass, but you need to do what's best for you long term.

I feel great. Body and mind have had 5 months of good food and restful sleep to rejuvenate. All my relationships are improved. Work is improved. Lost 10 lbs.

There have been ups and downs emotionally but the oscillations are getting longer and shallower. Can’t wait to see how I feel in another 5 months.

@Oreo Cat if you feel you have a drinking problem or you consider yourself a full blown alcoholic then talk to your Dr. You can go through alcohol withdrawals if you quit cold turkey.
