It's gonna continue to be good for you. Especially in the long run. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss drinking but I don't miss the hangovers and apologies I'd have to give in the morning. Nov 14th will be 10 years for me. Just remember why you quit when you get tempted to have "just one". For me at least, there was never just one. Unless you count it as just one 12 pack. lol

If you don’t mind me asking….were you 2 together when you both decided to stop drinking or did you get together after you were sober?

We’ve been together 8 years. Both drank when we met but this is my second time with sobriety (2.5 years sober prior, fell off the wagon during a trainwreck of a divorce).

Never thought I would stumble across a thread like this, Way to go on the 5 months!!!!! It's an amazing start to a new world of endless possibilities. Don't drink, go to meetings, ask for help. 1 statement that I have taken to heart and like the many before me I am proud to say I have been sober for just over 1 year, 1 day at a time.

Keep up the great work, it's truly worth it.

re: your dog - my prior dog never knew me sober/not high and that turned my stomach . . that dog loved me to death and I couldn't give him my all b/c I was too distracted with bullshit - when he passed, it made me so sad; I felt like I let him down.

When I got a new dog, I swore I would be there - in my full mental capacity - to take care of him.

It all started with a car wreck --> spinal fusion --> being pushed into 'pain mgmt'. After some time, I knew I had a dependency issue. I managed to avoid the destructive addict behavior, mostly b/c the idea of sobering up on the floor in jail terrified me.

It took me about a year of asking for help, not getting it and finally saying F**K it. I canceled my next 'pain mgmt' appointment and did what I needed to do. For 4 weeks I was sick and miserable - I just knew I didn't want to go back to that trap of being physically dependent on a substance.

I still struggle - mostly trying to get my life back on track after a LTR ended.
Once I was sober, he decided he was done - an odd turn of events, but I cannot control others; only myself. Still got my dog though so I'll be okay.

    Dogs are the best.
Don't discount the fact that your dog does give a shit!
Since you mentioned it, it clearly has an effect on you - whatever works for you, seriously.

I have read most of this thread and alot of it resonates with me.
I had an alcoholic father who committed suicide when I was 20. I know what addiction is and does, I saw parts of it in myself.
I had to sever ties with my best friend of ~30 years, because he kept drinking and crossing hard lines I had set. Didn't care about the drinking b/c I can't make him fix that - but I did care about him crossing boundaries I had set.
Neither one of them reached the point where they would admit there was an issue.

You can't fix a problem, if you don't understand it is a problem.
It all starts with a tiny bit of self awareness - no matter how you get there, that is key.
If your dog is the one who allows you to reach your come to Jeebus moment - so be it.

THX to everyone who as posted here and the threads they linked - all of your stories are helpful in knowing I am not alone.

    but ya don't!

    :hattip:for quitting!
hopefully that urge subsides over time, less and less each year that goes by

i used to drink alot, back when i was 16-19, to cope with the home life shit..
when i went to college, a friend across the hall would be brought home, slung of the shoulder of some dude - he would bang on the door, i would let him in so she could be deposited in her room. i didn't wanna be her [and have bad things happen], so i stopped the excessive drinking ASAP.

but if you gave me a bottle of pain pills - IDK - once that switch flips, it is almost impossible to shut off till you run out
luckily no doctor these days is just gonna give me that stuff and i think/hope i would refuse them anyway
if i could just go to the store and get more, i'd be dead

when the nerve pain in my legs/feet gets real bad, i just think about the month i spent detoxing and that puts things in perspective real quick
    never wanna do that again

    12yrs sober as of yesterday.
Partied hard through my 20's doing whatever came along and drinking heavily. (Whiskey to the point I'd lose vision in my left eye and wake up in a pool of my own piss, but hey)
Long story short, by 31 I wound up in the hospital with pancreatitis and just about died. Had about a week long detox and left with the option of living or dying.

I'm pretty sure that this is the only withdrawal that can actually die from. Be safe, be careful and talk to a Dr.

Nice job. It get's even easier. I'm 9 years this November. Funny thing is I was just fishing and ran into a guy I used to drink with. Turns out he quit in 2018. We had a really good chat about the old times and an incredible chat about how much better off we both where. Both physically and mentally. That talk is gonna be yet another positive thing I think about whenever the old "I can have just one" thoughts pop into the brain. Which is hardly ever anymore but it's always gonna be there.
