This is exactly what I had to do, one day at a time. It does get better everyday, keep going, good deal.

There is always hope. Don't give up. I was also in your shoes. My problem was not because of a bad upbringing, or anything like that. My family went to church almost every Sunday. I just had the "allergy." When I started, I couldn't stop. I did things while under the influence that I still regret today, but I can't mull over it. I drove after I had been drinking more times than I can recall. Ended up in jail. Embarrassed my wife. Thank God my kids were too young to know what was actually going on. My wife finally gave me an ultimatum one Saturday morning after I had had my typical Friday night of excessive drinking. Go to rehabilitation, or she was leaving and taking the kids with her. It was time. I was ready. I was tired and worn out. I had to do something. I thank God everyday that he gave me that opportunity to change my life. I have been sober going on two years now. Sobriety is an ongoing experience. You have to take it one day at a time. Don't let guilt take you over. Keep your head up, and get the help that you need. You will be in my prayers daily.

Congratulations on getting to the first step! Unfortunately, a lot of us don’t make it that far, and it’s the most important step. I tried everything I could to stop using. Eventually I realized that I could not do it. I did not have the ability to stop on my own and no one could do it for me- I was beyond human aide. I needed something more powerful than me. For me, AA was a way to develop a personal relationship with my creator. I needed divine intervention and it is the only thing that has kept me sober.

Only you can determine if you are an alcoholic. I would urge you to pick up a copy of the AA Big Book if you haven’t already. I’d be happy to mail one to you. If you don’t find yourself in that book, maybe you’re not. For me, I’m what the book talks about as being a “real alcoholic”. I felt acceptance for the first time in my life when I read that book, which I surely thought someone had written about me.

I’ll leave you with something someone told me that pissed me off when I heard it early on in recovery, but makes all the sense in the world now- “If I could give you the gift of sobriety, I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t rob you of the journey.”

    Oh look, another mod....
I have said those exact words to new comers before, and they looked pissed when I said it. I have also told others this:

When I first got sober, I asked people for the "Secret ingredient" or "magic pill" to get me sober and keep me sober. I'm glad that never happened. If I was given sobriety, I wouldn't respect it or value it. I respect it because I earned it, and I continue to earn it on a daily basis. A "pride of ownership" if you will.

Love that pride sentence. I have always said it's not like someone waves a magic wand over me every day.

I am sorry this is not a problem a few of us can show up with some extra tools to fix entirely; But it is awesome to see you reach out for help when you recognize that you need it.

It’s been an interesting month, started working again and trying to get into schools. But also made a Tacoma driving friend into a Tacoma driving girlfriend. So it’s been a good month
