Our trucks spend more time off road than on and that shit takes it's toll.

Ive never towed a thing and my fronts were toasted early and the rears were literally DESTROYED before 70k.

Replaced mine at 27,000. That's what happens when you drive in NYC (stop and go) and avoid the yellow cars.

It depends on how the vehicle is driven. On average they should go 100,000 miles. Mush longer if the truck is not used to haul heavy loads or pull things.

I have 86k on my stock pads now.

They don't have much more life left. I already have some stock replacements ready to install to get my next 85k. The stock pads are really good. Low dust and a great life.

I think it's mostly weight. I am maxed on payload pretty much all the time. I changed the five lugger's pads last time at about 110,000. Today it's at 139,000 miles and today I was rotating tires and pulled a drum. The shoe I looked at was about 1/16" of material remaining. So I looked at the front and found the pads about 75% gone. The remaining 25% isn't that important to me so I just bought a set of some top-dog ceramic pads and a set of rear shoes. Actually two sets of shoes - as I couldn't remember if I have 10" drums or 11 1/2" drums. <g>

BTW: Why aren't brake Shoes available with a ceramic lining? Pads are - shoes aren't - how come?

Disagree. My brakes have 118K and will probably go 150K. I spend a good amount of time offroad, maybe 30% of the trucks life would be reasonable. I think its because I live in small towns with minimal stop and go traffic. Also, I am mindful of upcoming stops or slow down areas and dont use the brakes when I dont have to.

OR, Toyota just put in some superb brake pads.

I just got back today from my 20k service, the guy at the dealership said I had 90% pads left up front and 80% pads left in the back. That seemed pretty good to me.

i have 2006 quad cab TRD sport, about 135,000 miles, first change on front was sept 2008, second change on front was feb 2011. third change on front was march 2014. rear breaks still original, checked them about 2 weeks ago plenty left. mostly highway miles. this last time i switched from using oem front pads to ceramics, we will see if worth the extra $$$$ hope that helps.

Not the same style of vehicle, but I just changed rear pads on my wifes '06 Avalon. Had 182K on the odometer. Pads had 3mm left.

The '04 single cab Tacoma 2.4L I just traded for a bigger Tacoma had 100K on the front pads and were not close to being done.

Saw the same some years ago with a '95 Rodeo. Changed front pads at 125K and they were only worn down 1/3 of the way.

Driving conditions have a lot to do with it. Stop-n-go will chew them faster, but I've always believed Toyota OEM pads are about as good as it gets.

I don't put many miles on mine, it is a lot of stop and go.
I will be watching to see how long the pads last.

LOL...yeah I sorta let him catch me.

Like some of you I've been complaining about the finicky brakes to the dealer since the truck was new.

3 times in the past 3 years they advised me to change the brakes.

I had them install new factory pads & rotors too, because I wanted the dang brakes cleaned, & I don't think they do anything like that on the typical inspection.

Also I wanted the spare parts--mainly the rotors--so I could have a freshly dressed set anytime I wanted to install them. They wanted to sell me aftermarket rotors too! WTH would they want to do that?

Anyhow the brakes work like new, but they have been dragging a little on and off for years & I think it's just brake dust buildup in the calipers causing them to not always retract freely.

I take the truck in every 6 months, and complain about this, but to no avail. Now that it's out of warranty I will just start doing the service myself.

BTW, I virtually never have a load in the truck, and I rarely tow anything but my small fishing boat. 95% of my driving is just commuting on the expressway. It's really never been off road at all.
