Wondering how long a 1st Gen. Tacoma can last? Here's some data from the auto auction web site at
    https://www.iaai.com/Home/Default

Today, December 10, 2014, there are 811 1st Gen. Tacomas (1994-2004) listed at the auction site. These are mostly insurance "totals", not vehicles that "wore out".Here is the data (some odometers are inoperable, I don't know how they were counted):
    Loss Type
    Collision (709)
    Other (67)
    Theft (24)
    Fire (9)
    Water/flood (2)

    Odometer
    Under 50,000 Miles (96)
    50,000 - 100,000 Miles (74)
    Over 100,000 Miles (641)
    ---(including 456 Over 150,000 Miles)

Notes: No telling how old the vehicles were when they were "totaled". You can go to the web site and "drill down" to look at vehicles more like yours (please, don't ask me to do it!).

p.s. If those photos at the web site don't get you to drive carefully, I guess we'll have to wait for you to grow up, or die . If the latter, please don't take anyone with you, and, please, do it before you pollute the gene pool.

A friend at work has a 98 just like the one I just bought. He is he original owner and odo reads ~450,000. a lot of highway miles from years of long commute. His truck runs great. Auto tranny and engine still going strong, body with no rust. Great little truck

I have no doubt that mine will last many years, the frames are the only thing that concerns me about these trucks.

The frames seem to be the main issue with these trucks, toyota really dropped the ball on this one. Aside from that my 98 looks almost new minus the lift and tires of course.

I was talking with one of the guys this morning at work about his 2002 Tacoma V6 4x4 Extra Cab SR5. He told me that he took it to the dealer to get the water pump replaced since it was making some noise. He did not realize it had a timing belt and had never changed it.

315k miles on the original belt, water pump, tensioner, etc. He had the dealer change it out and said it runs just like they day he got it brand new. He's only replaced a clutch, brakes once, tires and general maintenance.

That probably made the insurance claim a bit harder to process...

Shit mine has 256k still daily driving/mild offroading. Replacing the clutch tomorrow though. It's not slipping or anything, just engaging much too early.

Mine is just about to turn over 98k, so young! I just hope the truck and frame last as long as the engine and running gear do. Biggest things I need to do to it now are the timing belt and water pump change, along with put new gaskets in the t-case as it leaks all over underneath. No idea why, but my transfercase is the only thing leaking.

Why would it not run and drive just because it had an airbag deploy

Most modern cars will not function at all after an accident that deploys the airbag. When it goes off, it trips something in the computer that says no go and is next to impossible to get around without replacing the airbags and resetting/and or replacing the car's computer(s). Both those things costs several thousands of dollars to replace hence why insurance companies tend to total cars if the airbags deploy because it's cheaper in the long run to replace the car than go through all the trouble of fixing the wrecked one. It's even worse now with cars having up to 9+ airbags in them. Used to be fairly easy to get around when they only came with one or two airbags but those days are long gone. As far as I'm aware, no new car comes with just 1 or 2 airbags any more.

Apparently you've never worked in a body shop. ..I always drove cars with popped bags at the shop. ...

Never heard of that, worked several bajillion car wrecks. Yes an inertia switch on mostfuel pumps. It takes about a second to reset it if it trips in a wreck. Its to keep fuel from spraying from a damaged line.
