This truck is now having it's engine rebuilt. The guy that owned the truck before my buddy pretty much never did an oil change, so even though my friend changes it religiously, the damage was already done. We went to replace the valve cover gasket on the passenger side, because it was leaking badly, and some trash fell out and blocked a channel or something, because the oil light came on not even an hour after getting it on the road again. We planned on rebuilding it this summer anyways, so it's not too much of a bummer to be doing it now. It still ran strong as all get-out, right up to the end.

Sold my 95.5 with 160k. Aside from a minor oil leak, which i had fixed, and a starter go out around 100k I never did a single thing other than scheduled maintenance. I have no doubt that if I still owned it I would still be going strong with around 300k miles. Selling that thing was a huge mistake

Got 298K+ on mine. Fixin to join the 300K club. Oil change every 5000 with Castrol GTX, timing belt/water pump every 100,000 (3rd one coming up), and I had to put a battery in it last summer. Hot heat, cold A/C. TANK

188k on my 1999 5-speed v6, lots of towing and still going strong. Oil changes every 5k miles with Mobile 1 5-30 synthetic and OEM filters. Tranny, TX and diff oil changes earlier than recommended with Valvoline 80-90 gear oil.

How many of you high mileage guys tow regularly, and how much weight? I'm hoping a lot of you high mileage guys also tow on regular occasion. :)

My 95 SR5 just rolled over 330K. Everything original other than replacing the timing belt at 200K as a preventative maintenance issue, and some U-Joints.
The Garage that did the drive shaft U-joint replacement didn't keep the shaft timed, and it vibrated badly when it was reinstalled. Spent a ton of time sending it to some places that balanced driveshafts, but found out they only spun it up to 500 rpm. Found a shop in San Antonio that builds drive shafts for dragsters, and spins them up to driving speed. They got it right.

Have had my '02 3.4 in the family for almost all 185k miles and it has towed all sorts of stuff. Cars, trucks, moved countless times, pulled stumps, been borrowed by Tom, Dick, Harry, AND Jane. Not been kept up maintenance wise unfortunately but it still drives very solid and runs like a scalded cat on the original timing belt.

It's been said "In the end, there will only be cock roaches and Toyota 5VZs".

It's nice to see people with the 95-97 3.4 engines getting 250,000+ miles without head gasket trouble. I'm at 160k and I keep worrying if my 95 may run into the problem in the future. It seems like the earlier motors that were under the head gasket recall are more prone to HG failure than the 98+ years once the trucks get into the higher mileage range.

I've got a 96 4*4 5 speed stick Tacoma with the 3.4 Liter engine. No mods done. Outside of changing the oil and transmission fluid, I've replaced the alternator, power steering pump, and the exhaust system. Due to my lack of regular maintenance, I had to clean the MAS airflow assembly and replace the PCV valve. No other engine parts need to be replaced. Currently I've got 359 K miles. Engine still starts and purrs like a kitten. Outside of a somewhat squeaky throw-out bearing, I'll replace that when the original clutch goes bad.

My wife and I have a 1999 Tacoma with the 3.4, and it has 165,000 miles on it. We have used Castrol 5W-30 full synthetic since it has had 90,000 miles on it. The old Tacoma runs like a dream. It is our fixer upper house fix it truck. The Toyota 3.4 V6 is an amazing engine.
