My 2001 3.4 V6 Prerunner is at 308,000, but it's required some love. The guy who dumped it on me regularly towed at its capacity, which I believe led to some of the issues I'll mention later. He did change the struts and coilovers, radiator, upgraded air intake. When I got it, the only obvious issue was leaking valve cover gaskets, concurred upon by a mechanic I took it to for a pre-purchase inspection in the town where I bought it. The previous owner claimed he'd done extensive maintenance, and that "there may be some minor cosmetic issues, but you couldn't ask for a more mechanically sound first gen taco".
So far I've replaced the passenger door handle, driver's window motor, xtracab window latches, passengers' headlight, all exterior bulbs, some arbitrary rattles, battery, fuel filter, brake pads, brake fluid, engine and transmission mounts, engine oil and oil filter, whole rear diff/axle assembly, steering rack, sway bar links, and ball joints. I also did the driveshaft carrier bearing and u-joints as formalities. I still have to do the front lower control arm bushings and now that I've changed the rear diff it's obvious that the transmission's an issue too. Call me crazy for doing all this maintenance at such high mileage but I can guarantee that the engine is pristine; my friend who is a Toyota mechanic came by and confirmed this when I was doing the VCGs (not the mechanic who missed all the initial red flags). I feel like I'm too deep now to quit so we'll see where things go :) Besides, cars are in such short supply these days because of the supply chain issues so I've been more able to justify fixing the thing up.

I mean, Im not 100% sure that it was the cause but I just bought a 2004 with a bad motor and the intake and throttle body was caked with oil and sand basically... The k&n filter was in the truck still and it looked like the kid just kept oiling it instead of cleaning it... Anyway, the cylinders had like 30, 60, 90, 110 compression and when I pulled the motor and checked the valves they were totally fine.. I did the oil test and it brought the compression up to 130-140...

So, I basically decided that the sand that escaped the filter with the oil ruined the motor....

318,000 miles and counting on my 4x4, 3.4 '96 SR5. If yours is a 4x4, I'll buy it from you today. 65k is barely broken in.

My dad had a 93 Toyota pickup over 450000 before it was stolen and then bought a 2003 Tacoma and got it up over 400000 before someone blew a red light and jackknifed my brother in an accident 2 years ago. Other than maintenance my dads never replaced an engine or replaced the clutch as far as I know.

Get a dry air filter like the AEM Brute filter if the diameter is the same, you may want to verify
