Mine has 127k and runs great. From what I read toyota did not make the 3.4L engines some company called hino industrial manufacture of engines.

I have a 96 tacoma with 376k miles and its still drives great. I get about 20-22mpg doing 60-70mph.... Motor is original as far as i know. Bought it with 296k miles with no leaks. Now i had to rebuild the trans because i drowned it, and have a samll oil leak coming from my valve cover seal i believe. When this motor quits, idk if i want to swap in a 2jz or a UZ engine.

I am going on engine number three and still have not broke 115k.

Engine #1 went out with 112k on it after 7 years. Had regular oil changes and routine maintenance. Timing belt pully sheared off after the cam shaft seized.

Engine #2 was a rebuilt long block with a three year 100k warranty. Just went out two weeks ago with only 56k, had a bad #3 cylinder. Only had 30psi of compression. I will eventually have this motor rebuilt.

Engine #3 should be here Thursday. I bought a used JDM motor with 32k. Figured what did I have to loose.

Moral of the story is I love my Tacoma truck, and will keep putting motors in until the frame rots away.

That's what I thought too when I broke 100,000 miles many years ago but this mule is stubborn and keeps on going. Let's see how long my Chevy lasts.

Sounds like you're rough on engines lol. JDM engines are known and bound to have issues. Good luck

Actually to the contrary I'm not. I put an average of 12-14 thousand miles on a year. I very rarely go over 75mph, and all scheduled maintenance is done on time. Since I've been in Florida, I have been unable to do any wheeling. I guess that is what makes this so baffling.

Most of what I had read was JDM motors were pretty good. Regardless if it last me a year or ten. My plan is to have engine #2 rebuilt and standing by.

2000 TRD 4x4 Limited Xtracab ordered new. S/C, headers and cat back exhaust @1000 miles. Installed Underdog Racing S/C upgrades with bigger injectors, Fuel mgt. module and bigger fuel pump. Gets 17 to 18.5 mpg on hwy. Replaced timing belt @ 100K along with water pump, belts, hoses.
Rebuilt S/C nose cone once, front rotors and pads replaced. ABS pump failed @ 150 and I have left it that way. I think I like it better without it. Just have to watch out for the rear end on wet roads.

Castol GTX til 100K then Castol High mileage semi-syn since. Changed between 5-6 K.

Now 175K and runs as good as new. Getting a slight driveline vibration which I think is a u joint wearing.

1st generation Tacomas are the Best truck or vehicle I have ever owned. Drove a 95 Tacoma SR5 4x4 until it was totaled by my wife @ 100K. Ordered this one to replace it.

Don't plan on ever selling it. Just the paint on the hood and roof need a re-do because of the sun.

If you take care of them, the large majority of them last almost forever.

My 98 Tacoma has 325,000 miles on it. Owned it since it was brand new. This truck has had a hard life, pulling equipment everyday. For the past two years i have used it has my hunting truck and it has been rode hard. Just a testament to how great these trucks are. Everything is original.

    Curiosity question.............

Is there really any difference in this particular Toyota JDM and N American engine, in terms of design and build? Or are you just importing a low mile engine?

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
88,424 miles on my 3.4 as of today, zero problems with it since I got it 14k miles ago. Best Tacoma I've ever owned, had a 2.7 4 cyl 2nd gen before and it was a great engine too, just underpowered for my tastes, went V6 and never looked back! Don't miss the stick shift either.
