Got it new in 1998 with 300 miles from the test drives and salesmen driving it. It's hasn't been my DD for a while now but I take it out every now and then to blow the dust off it. I'll never get rid of it I don't think.

Do you have a newer Tacoma now? Or not trust the old 98 anymore? Still looks like a sharp truck in your sig.

No comparison to those getting into 500,000 miles, but I have 270,000, and my little sister has a 97 she bought in 1998 with 15,000 that now has 340,000. I just fixed every oil leak and the thing runs like new, it's because of her truck I bought mine, and neither of us think we'll part with ours.

Damn the luck! What do you plan to do now, fix it or find another engine?

It's a shame they crushed all the rusty trucks. We would have been able to get 3 Tacoma engines for each Tacoma still rolling.

Yeah it is, lots of perfectly good parts gone to waste. The whole cash for clunkers program really pissed me off too, many perfectly good and drivable cars were destroyed for no reason at all when they should have either been sold dirt cheap or given to families in need of reliable transportation.

image.jpg 490,000 on mine, just blew a heads gasket, but still running.
And dam engine still doesn't burn any oil.

I think the 500,000 is a bench mark for the head gaskets to go.

My buddy has a 97 4Runner with the 3.4 in it. It's got like 360k on it, daily driven, and he beats the hell out of it.

Finally blew the motor at 230,000, sprung for a Jasper with 100,000/3 year warranty. The birdpig has a new set of wings! OME heavy load lift kit, Dakar leafs w/AAL, frame mounted energy suspension 4.5" bumpstops, 882 coils, nitrocharger sport shocks, trail gear sliders, addicted offroad front bumper, KC 130w daylighters, Warn M8000, 31" BFG KM2's, custom dents and Nevada pinstripes.
I blew my 3.4 in December at 230,000. I bought the truck new in 98' and it's been a dd, landscaping truck towing a work trailer, towing a camper, camping/wheeling almost every weekend from spring through fall with an annual 4 week wheeling trip, several cross-country road trips, and commuting 90 miles with two trips over an 8900' pass every weekday for the last 3 years. I got a Jasper engine with a 100,000 mile/3 year warranty, and I'll get a new motor when this one dies. I'd get a new Tacoma if they weren't so damn big. They're pretty but they wouldn't fit down most of the trails I run.

Yeah, it sucks they're so big now. Might as well just get a full size because they are about the same size. I remember when Toyota Pickups were so small you could practically drive one into a full size truck bed and carry a spare truck around with you. Whatever happened to the true compact trucks like that? Bring them back, Toyota!

This truck is now having it's engine rebuilt. The guy that owned the truck before my buddy pretty much never did an oil change, so even though my friend changes it religiously, the damage was already done. We went to replace the valve cover gasket on the passenger side, because it was leaking badly, and some trash fell out and blocked a channel or something, because the oil light came on not even an hour after getting it on the road again. We planned on rebuilding it this summer anyways, so it's not too much of a bummer to be doing it now. It still ran strong as all get-out, right up to the end.
