Hi everyone, first post here. I have done some snooping around and decided I should just register and ask my questions directly. I have a 2001 PreRunner with 203,000 miles on it. I haven't had any problems with my truck and have kept up on all of the normal maintenance. My issue is that I have heard that this is about the time that the alternator and starter may begin to have issues. And while I have yet to experience any issues my job requires that I spend a large amount of time in remote areas far from cell range where I cannot afford to be stranded. I am debating whether or not to go ahead and replace both parts as preventative maintenance but first wanted to hear how long these parts lasted on some of your vehicles. Any advise would be extremely helpful, thank you very much.

If it's really starting to worry you, I would go ahead and replace both. Keep the old ones as spares behind the seat, in case the new rebuilds balk on you. You can get your core charges back later after the new stuff proves itself. If you are way out of range, I am sure you have a tool box with you and enough tools to do trail repairs.

About 160K before replacing my starter, still on the same Alt at 206K.

I just replaced my starter 2 weeks ago. I'm at 132,000 miles. Alternator is still going strong.

Mine are still original from 95.5 and 96. 217,00 on 1 set and 280,000 on current 96. I live in remote area also. Tend to park on slope just in case I have to jump 5 sp. Maybe pick up spares if your worried. I would leave on until issues start myself. I sold both off 95.5 on this site. Both worked perfectly. Real easy to rebuild starter also. Alternator not so easy.

My '97 made it to about 180k(now at 202k) miles and 15 years when the starter began sticking occasionally. The starter gear would remain engaged with the flywheel after the truck started and key was released. Made an odd sound, that is how I noticed it. Still running the O.E. alternator. I don't know of an "average" service life for either.

the alternator can be checked, the starter is one of the parts where it's fine until it's not.

    Check the TTORA Garage Section....
Starter and alternator still going at 165,000 miles.
However, in a month or so, I will be replacing my alternator for a HO version.

Hopefully the starter will give you some signs before it quits. As for the alternator, I'd say have it checked for some peace of mind.

Thank you for all of your responses. I will replace the starter to be safe and get the alternator checked before I make a decision on what to do with it. I'm glad I finally joined the forum and asked some questions. Thanks again.

My '02 currently has 256k. It still has the stock starter and there hasn't been any kind of indication that it's going out anytime soon. The alt. was replaced about 10-12k miles ago, but only b/c it was shorted out while offroading in the mud.

There's a lot of things that can go wrong that would leave you stranded when you're out in the middle of nowhere. I would feel totally comfortable with leaving everything as is.
