The stock Toyota batteries were surprisingly crap, my 2nd Gen OEM battery died after 3 years too. You'd get more than 3 years out of it for sure.

If you don't think extended life/capacity is important and don't mind the battery not living up to its full potential despite the increased costs, then there isn't much argument against not getting one.

Check out the last page or 2 of the battery thread. There are some pretty slick chargers linked for AGMs.

If your truck is tuned and you decide to go AGM you can ask your tuner for the AGM version of the tune to kick up your alternator output to what the AGM battery needs. Most tuners will do that at no additional charge if you got the tune from them originally. Just don't forget that you can't go back to a lead acid battery without going back to the standard alternator output tune.

I like AGM's, as I've been using them for 27 years. on my Tacoma, it won't fully charge my AGM in freezing temps. I keep on a trickle charge during the winter months.

I had an optima YellowTop for over a decade. Replaced it and have had the new one for 5 years so far

Also, in my second gen, i fit a 1,000 cranking amp instead of the minimum 750 cranking amp. I'm not sure if you can fit that in a third gen, or if you're fancy electrical system would tolerate more available amps.

Whatever brand you get, make sure to go with a deep cycle AGM. If you drain it somehow, it should take a charge again and come back to life.

Lithium costs waaaaay too much and they don't all handle being charged/discharged randomly.

Any recommendations for a trickle charger?

I just tested mine out of curiosity, and it's sitting at 12.1 volts, so a little weak. It's been in there for almost a year, and my 4Runner sits a lot. I'm hoping that a charger of some sort will help maintain the battery better than I have been.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that maybe I stuck my foot in my mouth a bit last night.

I plan on an Optima after the original.

I’d reevaluate. Check out the thread I linked earlier. Optima used to be great. They’ve since been bought out, outsourced manufacturing to Mexico, had severe cost cutting and quality has tanked. They are not the company they used to be. Odyssey and Northstar are the top manufacturers.

Quoting this to expand on your thought.
Thw 3rd gen voltage is controlled thru the ECU. Yes, you can flash tune to jump up the voltage. AGM batteries need around 14.X.
But once flashed, you need to continue using this type battery. Or flash back to normal charging voltage if going back to lead acid.

@tarbal255 If you ever plan on getting an agm battery, look for a trickle charger that can charge them as many dont have that setting. It will charge it, but not to proper capacity.

I also like the NOCO, but the Ctek's are also good(maybe better?).

I only just changed out my factory battery out of caution after 5 years and 2 month of daily driving. It did a slow crank on me after listening to the radio in accessory mode for 20 minutes... figured it was time. The factory battery can be pretty reliable.

When the time comes needing a new battery there's only one choice for me....a deka. I'm done buying those wally world batteries...their garbage. I put a deka in my tractor for the first time instead of just in my truck. Finally a battery that works when i need it.

Yep, I buy these too. They are made by Johnson Controls as are most automotive batteries no matter what label is pasted on them.

Big B+B X2 Power fan, however, I do keep them on a Trickle charger. Noco for AGM, battery tender lithium for my motorcycle which has a Shorai battery. If I couldn’t run a tender I’d keep the lead acid in there. When it comes time my 3rd gen will have an X2. Just my 2 cents.
