A lot of us run high quality 3" lifts. Best way to get 3"? Coilover shock (King, sway a way, Icon,) with a uniball upper control arm (camburg, total chaos-most popular and allpro).

Upper control arm will cost between 600-$700
    New coil overs 800-$1500

With that said, you could go cheaper and buy OME shocks with a larger spring that would equal 3", or Toytec sells a gas/nitrogen bilstein 5100 shock with a larger spring that's relatively cheap and will give you 3". Or just buy bilstein 5100's that provide 2.5" and add .5" spacers. Pretty cheap alternative. You could also go with balljoint aftermarket arms that allow proper caster angles for larger tire sizes while provided additonal wheel travel and strength. Only downside of the balljoint vs uniball is that the toyota joint will break faster when stressed and doens't provide as much wheel travel as a uniball. But if you notice my sig pic they hold up pretty good. They also save yourself about $300. If money is not your objective then do the uniball. Also keep in mind that you may experiencing a sqeaking noise if you run uniballs so be sure to grease them up real good in the event you buy a set.

Search Toytec.com and you'll see all your options.

And no matter how you go with 285/70 R17 (33" tires) you'll need to trim some plastic and possibly resect the body mount depending on wheel choice and caster settings. Hope that helps.

RESEARCH: there is no one ultimate way to lift your truck. You gotta research and find out what best suites you, that also includes wheels and tires. How much does the wheel weigh? Whats the off set and back spacing? 17" wheel or 16" wheel? Powercoat or teflon? Want better road manners or off road ability? Just some questions you should ask yourself if you haven't already.

    Hope that helps!

Huge help man! Thank you. The more I read, the more I'm concerned about the behavior of the truck after the lift. I've lifted multiple Jeeps-TJ's and late model IFS Broncos, but have not experienced the set backs I'm hearing about on the Tacoma. Really concerned about having on going issues with drivability and having to keep throwing money at it. I don't want a money pit and want it done right the first time. Thank you again for the great input!

Dad lifted the JK jeep this year with an old man emu kit. And honestly it rights very similar to my truck. People will always complain about a 'harsher' ride and how the steering doesn't feel like stock, the loss of MPG and horsepower. The fact remains for all vehicles fitted with larger tires and aftermarket lifts. Yes the tacoma will not ride like stock with 3" lift and 33" tires, but that's part of the fun! You should expect a more stiff truckie ride after moding suspension components. And what you lose in street performance is more than made up once off the road. My truck lost some hp that I gained back with an intake and catback, and with bilstein 5100 shocks it would handle better on the street if I didn't put 33" tires. If one plans correctly your tacoma will ride pretty damn nice, and you'll have a blast which is what it's all about.

The other point to keep in mind is that people tend to consider their trucks money pits in the sense that we're born selfish and always want MORE. So after you get your expensive coilovers and upper arms you'll want to go full blown long travel. Spindles, heimed lowers, heimed tie rods, limit straps, triple bypass shocks, and linked rear, not to mention glass fenders and roll cages... it goes on forever.

What other problems are you concerned about?

Get a 3 for sure! I have a 3" rough country lift and I love it. I fit 285/75r16 with 16x9 rims and I have had no problems. Just some minor trimming around the wheel wells. I payed $249 plus shipping and it included rear shocks. Great deal IMO http://www.roughcountry.com/toyota_4wd_tacoma_3.html

new to all of this lifting talk, looking at the tuff country 3" AAL. front spacer, without new shocks. priced at about 285. once installed, is there anything else i should buy to help ride quaility? i dont mind a rough ride, but i dont want the tires to wear oddly, and it seems that this lift is pretty self explanitory. i would love the toytech ultimate, but just cant afford it. thanks

Quite frankly, i think your reasoning alone should make your decision for you. Especially since you didn't even mention the 6 in lift in your opening statement.

Pro Comp 6in lift w/ Icon Coilovers,AllPro UCA's, AllPro Baja Leaf pack, Bilstein 5150's in the rear. Tires Mickey Thompson MTZ 275/70R18 w/ procomp 7089 wheels. ARB front bumper with mile marker winch, Custom made all quarter inch steel rear bumper. Demello rock crusher slider's. CoverKing neoprene seat cover's, AllPro trail armor All-pro U-bolt flip kit with Timbren bump stops and many many many other mods, way to many to list.
Have u found any body that makes a 6in lift other than pro comp, cuz I have VSC on my truck and pro comp is the only one that make a 6in compatible with 2009 and 2010 tacomas with VSC, but I have to run 18in wheels or bigger on my truck with a 6in lift and i dont want to run such a big wheel.

No you don't have to purchase aftermarket UCA's. And no you don't need to regear for 285's, however w/ 4cylinder regearing is recommended.
33" tires and 4cylinders would be sluggish.

6'' fab tech performance suspension lift, 35-1250-18 Nitto Mud Grappler Extream terrains, XD Monster 18'' matte black rims, Relentless Fabrication Front Bumper and Rear bumper with a Ramsey 9000 mounted in front bumper.

i got a 3 inch lift level kit from rough country for about 300 with shipping and it looked good, i then bough 33 inch nitto mud grappler extream terrain looks beasty as hell, minor trimming on the wheel well on front cant notice unless you actually look for it, gas milage not bad either, factory i got around 250-300 depending on the driving i did per tank. now i get around 250-260 normal driving still clost to 300 for longer drives..
