I know this has been discussed in depth all over tacoma world, but i'm having trouble weeding through countless threads and hundreds of opinions about trucks that aren't mine. Please bare with me, I'm a noob looking to lift his truck and add wheels/tires. Budget is $3k installed for lift/wheels/tires.

    THE TRUCK:

    2013 MGM TRD Sport

    THE WANT:

    • 3" lift
This is where i'm stuck. My truck is a DD, see's less than 10 miles a day M-F, with weekend trips to the mountain for mtb or skiing. There are so many options out there, and I can't land on the best option for me. revtek, toytec, OME, etc.
    upload_2016-10-17_9-23-8.jpg
    • 17" wheels
I'm nearly 100% sold on the TRD Pro 17x7 wheels but the SCS 6 screams my name, but they're always sold out.
    • aggressive tires
another confusing topic for me. I see threads about 285/70/17 rubbing, then I see threads about it never rubbing. I like the price of the 275/70/17 but can't find many photos of tires on 2nd gen's with the TRD PRO wheels.

Everything that I have seen says the Bilstein 5100s are the way to go but that if you are doing that much (2.5 of more) you are definitely going to need NEW Upper control arms and should probably go with new lowers as well other wise you are going to get drive train vibes, and have alignment issues.

well noted. this is something I haven't seen and is new to me. I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned with any of the dealers or shops I've been talking with. *rolls eyes*

Sure thing! And when I say "new" I mean aftermarket of course. Brands like "light racing", "Total Chaos" and others I'm sure you can find other recommended brands on here as well.It took me forever to weed through it all - especially since ultimately I was actually not wanting lift other than what would be incidental to the new shocks And coilovers. It came up several times in advice to me if I were replacing stock springs. There is also something about lean spacer for driver side too if you are replacing front springs.

Going 2-3"+, yes aftermarket UCAs may be needed. Aftermarket LCA are not necessary for the type of lift OP is looking at.

I have Icon coil overs on the front with icon UCA's. Icon 2.0 in the back with Wheeler's progressive AAL. Ride rite bags with cradles. I have 255/80/r17 cooper discoverer s/t maxx on @SCSPerformance SR8's. Rubbing only when wheels are turned hard and there's a bump. Feels like I'm on a cloud when driving dirt back roads.

wheels & tires are pretty much locked in at this point. TRD PRO wheels in matte grey with 275/70/17 KO2s. Hopefully no trimming involved, and aggressive enough to keep me happy :)

still can't decide on which lift to go with. I continue to get quotes back from shops with lack of information and no willingness to explain what i'm purchasing. I've pretty much decided against the revtek spacer lift as I plan on keeping this truck for many years to come and want to lift her right the first go round. but which lift is that? too many damn options :-(

255/75R17 are about the same diameter and available in C-load in KO2s. The slightly narrower tire should save you from trimming and the much reduced weight will save mpgs and power while the C-load will give a better ride. Food for thought.

current top 3 choices... in no particular order. From what i'm reading and understanding, I will be happy with any of the below and all are roughly the same lift height, good ride, can go off road, etc. Prices all seem to be around the same, give or take $100.
    • OME
    • Bilstein 5100
    • Fox Stage 1

I did Bilstein 6112/5160 combo with OME Dakar leafs and Camburg UCA. Marie is super helpful. Email her for a pricing list I think they might still be doing some deals.

In contact with Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road. Really starting to lean toward the OME kit with dakar leaf pack.

The dakar leafs make a world of difference.

What's the major difference going with the Dakar vs the other 3 AAL? Just trying to understand better

The factory leafs are inherently weak and i would bottom out over railroad tracks in town. Now i can carry more and the ride is smooth.

I'm running a Tuffcountry 3" lift (spacer in the front add-a-leaf in the back) and that's how I bought my truck. I put on Black Rhino Rockwells 17" and BFG KO2 wheels. 285/70R17. I rub 100% but I hear the cure for that is a CMC. Do NOT make the rookie mistake I did and buy spacers to attempt to fix the rubbing :frusty: It made the rubbing about 10x worse, and it's LOUD. I've seen firsthand from one of my fellow yota buddies who is running also 285/70 but a different brand of tire which I think are Goodyear Wranglers and he does not rub AT ALL. So it seems to depend on the tire as to the question of rubbing? With your budget, KO2's may not be the way to go. At America's Tire they quoted me at around $1,050 for all 4 tires alone. But I wheel frequently (even though it is my Daily) so it was definitely worth it. Hope this helped at all :fistbump:
