There are a lot of people here saying many different things and having their own specific experiences with lifts...I'm listening to all of it. Both the Toyota mechanic and the local company that would likely install the lift have brought up concerns about VSC (that was how I first heard about it), so I'm listening to them too. I appreciate the suggestion of doing my own lift and all the mods myself, but that is simply beyond the scope of what I am able and willing to do. I admire what so many others here have done with their trucks, so thanks for your suggestions.

The new Baja Edition is a great suggestion...suppose I could change my order (just placed it Friday). If it comes in something other than red/black, I might consider it. Doesn't look like the full model info is available yet.

What bjmoose said above is essentially right: I want a bulletproof truck...with no problems (to replace my '93 4Runner). Not in a position to "tweak my own stuff and save a buck". And the FJ Cruiser *is* cool, I really like them...but not enough cargo space for my purposes. I wouldn't consider anything but a Toyota...and (for me) the vehicle is only a means to an end, not the end itself.

I came here for help because it doesn't seem so simple configuring a 2012 Tacoma with a little more ground clearance...this discovery has been a great surprise to me, and I'm trying to get as much info from as many sources as possible before proceeding. Didn't mean to wear out my welcome with newbie questions.

Sorry if I kicked up too much dust on the forum...please motor on. Thanks.

Put my lift on end of dec. fox set to 3" in the front, deaver's in the back. Ran that with stock wheels an tires for a few weeks. had no problems with vsc at all, till i put diff wheels an tires on. method wheels and BFG A/T, i think this vsc kicking in has somthing to do with the wheel offset and the sensors, and from what i hear on TW, some cases are alot worse then others.

Eh, don't listen to me bro. I'm just being an asshole. :( it's been a rough week so I am a little more edgy than usual.

From every truck I've seen with moderate lift and plus 1 or 2 sized tires the VSC has been tolerable. Annoying at the worst of it and not totally unsafe like some descriptions make it sound. Your just going to have to try it... If you have issues you will be able to decide if you can live with them or not. Only you can decide this. Clunks and rattles in my truck would bother the shit out of other people but I know there's nothing wrong so I could care less. So we all take the issue with a different point of view so keep that in mind.

Dude 1 and 2 have the same issue
Dude 1 says "omg WTF fuck, my truck almost killed me"
Dude 2 says " meh, it beeped. Whatever."

I have a 2012 dcsb 4wd trd off road. I just put ome 884's with the top plate, and 1.5" aal's. I have absolutely no vsc or vibration issues. By the Way, stock wheels with 265's. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I've done quite a bit more research, including a very helpful long talk with the service manager at the dealership and with another firm that does lifts/mods to Tacomas regularly. The dealer used to send Tacomas there for lifts, but stopped because of VSC issues. They even had to refund a new truck purchase! They used the master tech's personal Tacoma as case study, but never fully resolved the problem (although it improved after recalibration). That vehicle had a spacer lift.

The VSC going off in fast sweepers is NOT a minor issue.

My plan is to go with an Icon stage three lift, but keep the factory wheels (painted or powder coated black) with slightly larger BFG A/T 265/75R16 tires. Will recal zero point if necessary after alignment. Sounds like two chances out of three I'll have no problem; the UCAs make a big difference, apparently.

The TX Baja won't be available without the hideous graphics package, so I'm sticking with my original order. Additional mods will include Slee step/sliders, an ARE shell, pioneer sound system, and an ARB bumper with winch and lighting (when it becomes available)...along with a host of minor details (second battery, air compressor, Yakima rack on the shell, locking tailgate, grill mod, cosmetics, etc).

My car broker agrees; nanny systems have ruined vehicles in some fundamental ways. And the service manager pointed out that when these systems fail outside of warranty they will be *expensive* to fix. Again, this whole experience of buying a new Toyota has been COMPLICATED and in some ways DISAPPOINTING.

The lift will void my suspension warranty. Just gotta roll with it and cross my fingers in order to get what I want...

there is always the fact you can disable the system in 3 seconds by either pressing and holding the vcs button or unplug the wheel sensor above the driver frame rail. this will also disable the abs

Disable by pressing the button does not fully disable (VSC still present but diminished). Messing with the electronics/wiring (ABS hack) voids the warranty on the ENTIRE vehicle.

Not ideal solutions. Hope to get the lift done right with no issues. That's why I'm here.

    Desert Rat,

If I were as worried as you, I would cancel your 2012 purchase, find a used 05-08 (without the VSC/TRAC package) with low miles, and go for an extended warranty. Not too hard to do. Last April I found a 2007 with 22k miles.

PS - I have VSC, 2" lift and 265/75R16 on stock wheels. Absolutely no VSC issues. Also, with an 2007-2008 (VSC/TRAC equipped), when you hold the VSC button, VSC is completely off.

I already have a GREAT used vehicle...my lifted '93 4Runner (original owner, 149k miles). The entire point and purpose of the new/different vehicle is to get something bulletproof that will last twenty years...likely more. Plus, I'm very picky about the configuration (six speed, TRD OR package, only certain colors, etc).

Both the service department (including the service manager and master tech with the Tacoma) and others on this forum have said VSC does *not* fully go away when depressing the button. But even if all of them are wrong about that, pressing it every time the vehicle is started is not particularly great solution for me (but better than nothing). Again, I'm trying to find the optimal configuration of parts and modifications that have the greatest probability of 100% total success and the least impact on the factory warranty. The Icon lift with new UCAs, factory rims and 265/75R16 non-M/T tires, proper alignment, steering column centered, and recalibrating the VSC (if necessary) seem to be the best way to go. If there is a better plan for 2-3" on a 2012 Tacoma I'd love to hear it.

I appreciate all the suggestions, thanks.

Well, a low mileage (~20k miles) Tacoma doesn't equate to a 149k mile 4 Runner, but I see your point.

From what I can tell, and as you already stated, you should be fine with OE offset wheels.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

    Stock 15" 2nd gen wheels ?

And VSC is not completely off when " disabled " , the sensitivity is greatly reduced however

Yes, I'll keep you all posted on the progress. 60-90 days just for delivery (truck is being built in Texas...none available in North America with my configuration).

As mentioned earlier, I'll be doing none of the mods myself. My area of expertise lies in a completely different field. But it's way cool what some of you are doing yourselves!

    Typo. 265/75/16 is correct.

As far as VSC goes, I've yet to have it kick in when "during braking or while the yaw rate is too large" (2007 Tacoma). Also, the VSC Off light does not turn off when going over 30 mph like 2009+ Tacomas do.

    Ah so

I've had the VSC system engage on snow when " disengaged " but you have to really get out of shape

The light stays on over 30mph when VSC is off

why is it so hard to unplug a wheel sensor? it wont void warranty, you dont have to do it every time you start the truck and if you plug it in and drive 50', the lights go out and the system resets. no check engine lights and no issues...
