Anyone here running some sort of limited slip or locked rear end? I get tired of my truck breaking traction so easily in 2wd all the time and spinnin one wheel.

I put in a limited slip from a TRD Sport (I think a 2007 or 2008). I had it apart twice, once when I bought it to check the thickness of the clutches; and a second time to add shims to it to increase the preload of the clutches pack. I will need to open it up eventually, since the clutches were close to the tolerance for thickness, and I want to add even more shims to make it even tighter.

With the LSD, if it is raining/snowing, both back wheels spin if I give it more than half throttle in 1st or 2nd gear (2nd gear only in the snow, the 2.7 can't spin 265/75 BFGs in the rain). Only just recently (when the roads where starting to dry after it had rained) did I experience only the inside tire spinning, like an open diff.

Was the ls the entire axle assembly or just the ls parts? And they worked fine with the gearing? I figure the trd sports have a different gear ratio

I bought just the 3rd member from a TRD Sport, and removed the LSD carrier from it, to install into my original 3rd member. That way I kept the 4:10 gearing, and I didn't have to mess with checking the gear patterns. Everything came apart quite easily, and fit back together nicely!

Finally put on my 255/80r17s, Falken Wildpeaks on 4Runner wheels. No rubbing with a Fox 2.0 lift up front (about 2.25" on our Reg cabs), even flexed with diagonal tires off the ground. The light weight of the truck means I'm not able to use the full suspension travel in the front, though. Super super happy with this. Night and day difference compared to my old 245/75r16s lol

If anyone's interested these E-rated tires chalk test to ~28 psi front/25psi rear when cold.

255/85 r16 cooler st maxx’s did well in the snow! Saving up for a regear, the auto and 4.10 is a tad under geared I feel.

    I did 4:88s with 265/75-16s and it's still a little sluggish.

I figure the 2tr is always going to be slow, it doesn't bother me too much. It would nice to hold 3rd gear while going up hills better or cruising in 4th without having to downshift as much. Running at just under 2000 rpm for 65 is just too little of rpm it feels like.

Yeah don't get me wrong my slow truck is even slower, but the slightly lower gearing of the manual + full control of when I want to shift gears makes the stock 4.1 rear end a lot more livable.

A post to keep this thread alive. I re-geared to 4.88’s. So far, so good.

Do yourself or by others? What’s the cost? Just bought a 2014 manual, considering doing the same to push 255/85 pizza cutters.

    Yep.
    Welcome to... first post!

Semi-do-it-yourself is the way to go if you can. Order complete diff's from a reputable shop (https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/) then swap them out DIY.

    I'm also a manual, currently running 255/75 (32's) with 4.56. Would't go 4.88's till you slap on 35's. Auto's are a different story.

Very cool. Appreciate the additional details and suggestion. The ecgs 7.5” kit?

If you have a gen 2 4x4 without the e-locker i believe it is the 8.4” set from ecgs.

NP. I’m saving up to do the swap for a complete third member from ecgs myself. Going to stick with the 4.10s that i’ve got, but have them add in a truetrac.

i might ask if there’s a difference in cost to have them install and send the same diff back to me (have another vehicle so can wait) or whether that even matters.

I’d like to go truetrac while at it as well, or even torsen. Better nothing, right?

for sure! I was specifically looking for a prerunner so I can build up a 2wd + lsd daily. I have an 86 d21 hardbody 4x4 if I want to get crazy out there. The truetrac seems just right for my truck and dd status.
