I think they had a low range option in Australia but not here in the states.

I couldn't care less what someone else thinks of my lifted Subi Outback - I like it . . . a lot.
It was built for the beach but has done some moderate off road trails with no problems. Stock it has 8.7" of ground clearance with the slightly bigger tires a little over 9". The 3.6 boxer engine gives it plenty of torque and a lower center of gravity than a typical V6 or V8.
I took it up to an old abandoned quarry with my brother-in-law (trick out Wrangler) and his buddy (4x4 F250) with no problems at all.
Long trips or bad weather . . . . yeah the subi gets the nod over the truck every time . . . and I love my truck.

We see low 30's on the interstate at 75, my Tacoma sees about 15 mpg at the same speed.

Wait until y'all find out the Outback XT puts out 277 lb-ft at 2000 RPM compared to the 3rd gens 265 at 4500...

While not lifted, it is extremely capable for a sedan and much more fun/confident in the snow than my Tacoma.

I actually cross shopped it against a 3rd gen and ended up with this.

Oh there will be some mods all right
In my experience the Passport was an absolute lemon. The AWD system overheated on me doing a fifth of what my Outback Wilderness did happily without complaint and that was only one of the issues.

Wife gets 26mpg all day city driving, close to 30 on the highway at even speeds, I've got an image someplace that showed 42 MPG on that thing.

Tows the little camper like a dream.
