You can tow what you are comfortable towing but but don't suggest the tacoma is not made to tow what they are rated for. It is absolutely made for it provided you have electric brakes and brake controller. An F-150 which weighs only 500 lbs more than a tacoma is rated to tow 12,000 lbs. Not sure how the fuck they justify that though.

    Feelings.

If a truck is rated for 6800lbs, it's a conservative bet that it will tow it. It can do it safely. What may not be safe is the way the driver drives the truck with that much weight behind it.

Key line, it can do it safely. Can't regulate stupid people.

I don't know. It depends on what you are towing and what hitch set up you have . if loaded properly. Like I said my travel trailer is around 5000 pounds. I use a husky WDH with anti sway built in. Never had that push me around and it's been out and about on some windy days.

I went to school to drive semi trucks, I can back a 40+ foot trailer, this wasn’t a big deal to back up.

I'm referring to the lack of torque the 3rd gen Tacoma has in reverse. I was backing up a hill yesterday with not enough power to move. I've also noticed 4wd high is pretty worthless on a hill.

Your experience is due to a combination of your inexperience, and screwing up the vehicle's balance by mucking with the suspension. There is NO issue with pulling FAR FAR more, safely, than what the sticker says... as long as you are competent and don't compromise the vehicle.

Ok, Shemp. Maybe find someone else to load your trailer for you.

Its very simple how they "justify" that. The vehicle is NO MORE CAPABLE of handling the load than Tacoma is, but they lobby (bribe) the US government in order to allow them to bend the rules in their favor.

    Try low.
That gives you an extra 2.54:1.
And a small amount of ingenuity can allow you to trick the 4wd ecu into leaving the front ADD disconnected, which results in 2WD-Low.

Thats because vehicle weight isn't even close to the only determining factor when they test and come up with tow ratings....

"These specs can vary greatly depending on what engine, axle ratio, cab, and drive your truck has. For example, a 2014 F-150 4x2 regular cab with a 3.7 V6 and 3.55 axle ratio has a maximum loaded trailer weight of 5,500 pounds.
    A 2014 4x4 SuperCrew with a 3.5 EcoBoost V6 and a 3.73 axle ratio has a maximum loaded trailer weight of a whopping 11,300 pounds"

HP, torque, axle ratio, brakes, tires are just more of the things that count into the towing capacity rating and the Ford F-150 is a beast and just getting started in their lineup.
