Not a big Subaru fan but they are more capable than many might think. I wouldn’t want to see them side by side with the Tacoma on some different off road challenges. Might threaten your Tacoma’s manhood.

I'm not hatin' on what anybody likes to drive, but I'd take 2wd with clearance and approach and depart angles vs. grounding out. I don't see what good a winch on a car is if you get stuck or rip off a $2000 bumper on the first water bar on a road. I regularly scrape the bottom/ ground out my front bumper and my trailer hitch during Grandpa level softroading. YMMV, of course.

i went from a forester to a tacoma and the subaru was flawless in snow and ice with cheap tires and has good clearance but the angles were scary with just flimsy bumper covers, and the cvt acted funny when pushed hard.

    and I needed a bed.

with good tires a subaru will beat anything when driving in snow

And that's why there are so many here.

All the clearance in the world and super cool MT's don't do shit for ya when you're sliding sideways down I70.

This is truff, my wife has an Outback, in the snow it's way better than my Tacoma.

Honestly, there is a bunch of insecure sumbitches on this forum.

Exactly. I’ll take a Subaru in the snow over my truck every time. And honestly, my fiancés Outback XT is way more comfortable for longer road trips. If we’re not headed off-road/camping, we take her car.

My Tacoma manhood is fully inverted. No shame. For malls only. Well and towing.

i had a 2019 forester sport and the oem tires had tread like a doughnut spare - lame - and I put wildpeaks on it
and it handled so much better and looked like a real tire but never got the chance to try new tires in the snow before i traded but made $6k for ending lease early after 1.5 years - would have been nice to have 3 vehicles but no space.......had to get 6 yards of sod in the subie on day and was so careful with a tarp but made such a mess - needed a truck

Buddy of mine bought a Crosstrek & took it out to Four Peaks with us recently. He loves it.

    It’s ugly.
    It’s AWD, not 4WD.
    It has a CVT.
It’s meant for slippery roads, not off road.
    It’s a station wagon.
    It has little power.

Other than that, it’s fantastic and just right for California, Colorado & Canada.

Gas mileage would be the only advantage.

My wife’s 21 Crosstrek has 8” of ground clearance in stock form, it climbs uphill in snow and ice better than anything I have ever seen. It handles like a sports car on the road- if I didn’t drive my truck i might be tempted to drive a Crosstrek full time.
