Went riding after work this afternoon. Got into some deep water but the engine did fine through riding. I got back to work to drop my buddies off and went to start the truck back up and it wouldn't start. I tapped the starter and it started but with a lifter tapping that wasn't before I parked it. It was apparently missing too and the exhaust was very rich.

A couple possible helps. On the way back to work the battery light came on. Also check engine light currently reading the code p0171 that didn't come on until I went to crank the truck again.

I'm leaving the truck at work and having a buddy drive me home until I figure out what the next step is.

    Any help would be appreciated.

thing is, our engines don't have lifters. so the noise is probably (hopefully) a pulley.

p0171: if you submerged your engine in water, you submerged your O2 sensors in water. they may be bad and/or shorting now.

you submerged your engine in water, starter most likely got wet and got water where it shouldn't, may need another. and if water caused the starter to not start, trying to start the motor probably drained the battery with the starter in that condition. hopefully you didn't get any water on the alternator!!!

Well, I guess I showed my limited knowledge on engines.

o2 sensors shouldn't cause the miss though right? they would just report it, basically

Starter will need replacing, but that doesn't solve the missing the engine is doing right now.

o2 sensors read and adjust fuel ratios. try running with a higher octane fuel to see if the knocking stops for that tank.

It's knocking, but missing pretty bad too. Can barely drive it a few feet and am working on getting a trailer to trailer it to my house

knocking is caused ultimately by some sort of bad air/fuel mix. try running a higher octane fuel with some octane booster to see if it helps you get around.
