Almost 63k miles in 11 months over two continents. These engines make noise. I can say different oils quiet the valvetrain down quite a bit. But I’m out of warranty. You’re not.

Completely uncomforting but this sounds exactly like my truck. I'm at 68k on a 17 and its been doing it for a long while, its loud as can be but so far in my case, I've had no issues.

my 23 has a valve tapping noise under hard acceleration at times. it's hard to reliably reproduce thus hard to have the dealer check for

Just bought a 22 offroad and it makes the exact same noise. Thought about disregarding it until I seen this about your lifter.

My 22 makes the same noise. Cant seem to get past the default answer at dealer ( oh, its normal cleaning cycle and HP pumps ). Seems they wont take me seriously. They sure had alot more interest in me before I wrote the check buying the truck though !

I think the noise is a bit concerning since it definitely sounds like a knock or lifter issue, which at least one person has confirmed was the case for them, but there are so many people on the Tacoma forums (and Highlander and Lexus) reporting the same thing. Maybe it is just a characteristic of the engine or Toyota engines in general. My previous 23 RAV4 made the same noises (different engine but same D4S fuel system). I started using 89 fuel in mine and I’ve noticed the noise a bit less. I still have 57k miles of warranty so I’m not going to sweat it.

One thing I know for sure is that the noise isn’t the cleaning cycle like so many people say. The cleaning cycle only comes on occasionally and it’s higher pitched and much faster in frequency.

Yeah, I know. My truck sounds just like the video someone posted in this thread earlier. It does get louder at times. I hear it best at idle. When I accelerate , I cant hear it as well but then again on decelerating It comes back. Guess it may be a characteristic but It drives me nuts !

I don't know much about this diagnostic computer but will it throw a code if there's a problem with a lifter ? Or does the lifter have to create a worse problem before the diagnostic tool will pick it up ?
