Ok i have a lifter tick on my 14’ 4.0L 4x4 base Taco. I am worried about spending 100’s on parts that Im not sure will fit, also, i have not been able to find any videos on how to do it. I want to see how it is done to know what parts I need to do the repair myself. I can use the lift at my work, but it has to be done in one day.

    You don't have lifters.

the 4.0 is also known for being quite noisy on the valvetrain side of things due to its "lifter" set up. It is commonly referred to as the "Taco Tick." It does mimic a lifter noise but it is completely normal for our engines. Post a video of your sound as we can help you tell if it is the tick.

I can get a video up tomorrow. The engine has 67k miles, and this tick is fairly new. Ive heard some quite ticking since i bought it (obviously injectors) but the new sound is moderately loud, i can hear it from in the cab. My first thought was exhaust leak, but its not coming from the manifolds.

The 4.0 doesn't have variable valve lash or variable valve lift (VVL), but it does have variable valve timing (VVT) on the intake cam.

It has solid shim under bucket "lifters" with no hydraulic lash adjustment thus it is an inheretly noisy engine because there is always a slight amount of clearance between the buckets and the cam.

It seems that the tick can start at any time. When was your last oil change? It can get louder coming up on your interval. Is it louder on the driver side of the vehicle? FWIW I doubt it is injectors that you have been hearing and rather the usual valvetrain noise. Only reason I say that is because you usually can't hear injectors over the valvetrain. Do you have any other symptoms or just the noise?

Shoot you've got me. I work for chrysler and all of the pentastar V6's are VVL's and Ive been dealing with a couple gladiators that have been having issues with them. I got confused because they are both kind of loud. I'll edit that post...

I did an oil change about a week or two ago and added lifter tick additive to the oil. No other symptoms, but i have other issues that me be covering them.

I work at a Chrysler dealership across our heavy line guy. I see new engines replaced on our 3.6L shitboxes all day.

Yea I'm not aware of any Toyota engines that have VVL, heck many of them like the 4.0 didn't even have hydraulic lifters.

Yup. They wipe the cams out all day long. Can't forget the plastic oil coolers in the valley that warp every 30k

Man, I am really embarrassed I mixed those up lol. I think I need to send Toyota an apology for associating chrysler garbage with our awesome trucks

I dont have any complaints about the 5.7L except space in the engine compartment. The 3.6L cause problems and the 2.4L should not exist.

I would never own a Chrysler product, I see so many issues with just about everything in their lineup on some pretty low mileage stuff from electrical gremlins to engine failure.

When I first got my 15',it bugged the shit outta me. Whats weird is,once I put it in gear, the sound pretty much goes away. I've pretty much forgotten about it by now.

All the 2.4's around me seem to come with head gasket seepage from the factory lol. yeah the 5.7s are decent if the oil changes are kept up with but they usually aren't and then cam and lifters go. Also can't get past manifolds on those things. With the steering shaft, dipstick, and parking brake cable on the driver side you get like 5 new cuts every time you do one...
