Tacomas are noisy, but so are the other brands at idle. Ever pulled up to a stoplight with windows down? Lots of rattling going on.

The cleaning cycle is more of a rapid fast click. Doesn't sound like what the OP posted.

An OVERHEAD camshaft actuates the valves lol.

Please point out the lifter to me in the pictures below:

Exactly, they have lash adjusters and roller rockers, Not really lifters.

Some engine makers call lash adjusters “tappets”.
If they’re hydraulic they all take up lash in the valve train. It’s just that a lifter is typically in the block and is actually transferring the lift to the valves, not just controlling lash.
There are also “bucket” tappets or lash adjusters where the cam directly operates the valve thru the bucket. No rocker arms.

Six or a half dozen, we all get the idea when someone calls it a lifter.

Lash adjusters, lifters, buckets all can be non-hydraulic as well. Typically they are all adjustable via a set screw or shim.

The "lash adjuster" is a hydraulic lifter.

Weird that they(Toyota) call it a lash adjuster instead of a lifter like you think it's called. What do you think actuates the valve because it sure isn't that component?

It's the rocker in conjunction with the lifter....

I know you are a google mechanic, but most people in the field would call that a lifter..

LOL sure thing big guy, you know me all too well. I know you don't care about what things are actually called so you must be one hell of a master mechanic.

Most likely it is a sticky lash adjuster at the idle. I do get this knock once in a while at hot idle while monitoring obd2 data for DI cleaning cycle. In my case, the noise happens when the cycle is off.
On 2gr-fks failure thread, there is a comment made that he heard from techs that there are some manufacturing issues with bores for lash adjusters, causing them to stick.
Also, there was a guy here who had the roller depart and took the head in the process.
Knowing that the oil pressure at idle is low, it can be linked to the sticking lash adjuster.
I see when AC kicks in, the noise usually disappears with a rise in rpms.
Other source of tapping noise is the vaccum pump (pax side of the engine). If yours is SR, SR5 or Sport trims, it could be it the source.

    Some stuff
I've had this same "lifter" noise. first noticed it when I was out wheeling all day at low speed or idle it would start tapping fairly loud. it comes and goes and sounds exactly like a lifter issue. I started running 5w-40 oil and it has SIGNIFICANTLY quieted it down. very rarely do I hear it now and when it does start its not as loud and lasts in a couple second long intervals.

I've had the truck since 2021 and have always used 0-20 mobile 1. Every 3k miles.
I might try something a little thicker like some 10-30.
