I see alot of good skid plates on here, but I feel are overkill for what I need in south louisiana. Anyone have any experience with a lighter skid plate mainly for sliding across mud when bottomed out and not crawling over rocks.

Yeah the lighter aluminum versions are going to be more expensive than steel.

$240 will get you steel without reinforcements. Not quite as light as aluminum, but a good bit cheaper and only 30 lbs heavier. Down low you won't even notice the difference. That's just my .02

The TRD Pro version is a solid setup and would be more than enough for the things I encountered while in New Orleans

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Replacing and OE plate, or is there no plate now?

Wondering if an OE plate would meet your needs?

If yes, and you don't have one, post a WTB in the B/S/T forum and your regional forum.

Folks who want heavy duty remove the OE bits pretty regularly.

No oe plate now idk why a trd off road would be sold without one but it happened and paying 350 for Trd pro just seemed much. I was looking into the ARB full skid for like 750ish. But thanks for all the info. and yeah ultimately the weight wouldn't matter I just definitely dont need all the extra bracing.

If your Off-Road didn't come with the lightweight splash plate you need to go back to the dealer and ask WTF. It's not heavy duty but will keep the mud and sticks you find in the swamp out of your engine bay. I made several trips to off-road parks in Louisiana with the stock off-road plate.

You probably have the OEM skid plate under there. They are so flimsy they don’t even look like a skid.

Yeah I brought it up on negotiations and got a deal on it so didnt concern with it to much. They had rims tires and lift on truck already at dealership and got it at better price then some.of buddies got their stock sport and sr5. So I figured I could get one before hunting season. And worst case if something did happen it's under warranty and will cost them anyway

Your biggest thing with an aftermarket skid set is the shipping is killer. The TRD skid can often be found with free shipping from eBay dealers or you can price match at your local dealer. Maybe Southern Style Off-road in Baton Rouge has a skid set now.

I emailed them today asking if they started building them yet I would rather buy local anyway and I got a bumper from them I'm picking up in a few weeks.

Northshore Toyota in Mandeville will price match. Endless Horizon Expedition Outfitters is on the West Bank and might be able to help you out.

I’ve got a set of OE skids you can have for free. But this is what they look like now after mild use. Lol. If you know someone handy with a welder, making your own is really not all that expensive. 6C88EA32-72A5-4CDA-9575-DE9FDD4310FC.jpg

Yeah I may try gator trax boats now that you said that about welders. I know they make aluminum dog boxes they may do that for me for a good price. They have a separate shop for side jobs like that.
