If you think Toyota would not put an electric fan and get just 1 or even 2 mpg for something that simple, they do it in a heart beat to help the CAFE mandated average minimum miles-per-gallon standard for fleets of cars and light trucks produced for sale in the United States.
From what i can find out its more like .2 mpg if that
don't get me wrong i WANT to change the fan / lower noise / better AC at slow speeds / i wish better MPG /.
even for $100 i would never get the money back at 150,000 miles.

They stop making upgrades as soon as they hit their fleet average numbers not when they max out on possibilities, otherwise they would do everything possible on every model and not just where they need to. If an upgrade or tech improvement is cheap then yes it gets added as a selling point but they'll keep as much in reserve as possible to be able to meet the next set of requirements. If they needed the fan to get the average we'd have the fan. Instead they put itty bitty wheels with minimum rubber mated to a tall rear axle ratio in the base model to get mileage with smaller steel wheels rather than more expensive larger alloys. They take out weight where they can and sometimes as they shouldn't (skimped on leaf packs, hoods that flutter at speed) but it's always the cheapest way to get the improvement first. It's simply not the case that they will always do everything they can to make the best vehicle possible. They could also get more by going with lighter alloy wheels on the base model but they don't do that either

Not a myth if you are running an engine that has a knock sensor, and is able to advance/retard timing based on detected knock. While you are correct that higher octane fuels don't contain more BTUs of energy, your engine can produce more power (resulting in better fuel economy) by running more advanced timing. (Don't take my word for it. Look it up.)

It doesn't do a damn thing and even if it does create a minor boost in fuel efficiency it is no where close to enough to offset the cost difference. No where online have I found a credible source that says utilizing premium fuel is going to be worth it.

I didn't say it was worth it, in fact I run 87 octane fuel in my truck because it isn't worth it. I said that the engine will be able to produce more power. Therefore, you will be able to get slightly better fuel economy.

I did an efan on my Trailblazer SS and it definitely helped. It wasn't an end all be all, but the engine revved easier. Now the 3.5 V6 is no LS2, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. I'd do the swap on this truck if I got the itch.

Edit: Perhaps I should say use premium 93 as opposed to 'filling up' since the extra weight of a full tank doesn't help your goal (as others have mentioned.)[/QUOTE]

Actually, Premium fuel has less energy and sometimes reduces mileage if your engine is designed for regular fuel. My stock Wrangler lost almost 2 mpg with Premium the 4 times I tried it. The supercharged Wrangler I drove required Premium because of its Tune and the blower but stock ones ran worse.

I’m glad this thread was started. I don’t need to save money, hypermiling is a hobby of mine.

Nobody stays at 5200 rpm unless they're doing a towing video on the grade to the ET. Mileage is dominated by where the engine spins 99% of them time. No matter which fuel you use at 4000 rpm mileage will suck.

I lost 2mpg when i went from the electric fans on my Land Rover Discovery to a heavy duty fan clutch in the Arizona heat. Think about the continual drag that fan has on the motor when the clutch is engaged

Agreed. Hence the dyno results from using 87 vs 93 octane on OVTune. You're right.

I tried hypermiling and got 24mpg. If you're getting anywhere near that, you aren't enjoying your truck IMO. Hypermiling is not fun. Lol
