I'm planning on doing this mod too because I want to convert my current front turn signals to fog lights. From what I understand the reason for using the bigger bulb and socket is the need for dual filaments - parking and turn signal. The stock socket isn't made for a dual filament bulb, so I'd bet that the guys who invented this mod went with the smallest replacement parts they could. It's not perfect but it's cool.
