I love the confidence. I mean you're probably dead wrong, but I still love the confidence.

I just put a 2" lift on my truck and was considering going with 285s.
Considered all the downsides of 285s and stuck with the 265s. I'm not sad.

Lost about 2-3mpg vs stock tires with the 265/75r16 ultra terrains on stock wheels on a 2021 TRD OR. The tread of the tires makes a big difference in your MPG, it's not just weight.

If you're willing to put up with the 285 potential rub issues, then you can probably find a ~45lb 285 SL tire (if SL is something you'd consider).

I went with the 265/75 UT's, but wish I could find Mastercraft CXT 255/85r16's in stock somewhere...

Net/net, get what you already know you want.

I'll pile onto the tall skinny vote - you get more ground clearance with no suspension mods, and (slightly) better MPGs than short fat tires.

Let me be a little more clear. You can run 285/75/16 on stock wheels and 16x8 ET0 wheels and not rub under normal day to day driving situations. Yes you might have to heat gun some plastics, but CMC is not required. It has been documented multiple times on this site. Yes you probably will rub flexing the truck. For my purposes of mainly a daily driver I will be fine.

Hate the tire options and cost of the 255/85/16 sizes. Mainly the cost. haha

Shocked to hear you lost that many MPG with the UT. Haven't seen that talked about in the dedicated thread for them.

    True, they are expensive.
If you really love cutting pizza, you could go 235/85/16, Diameter is larger than OE and believe unsprung mass would be lower than OE as well.

285s dont rub at all on my stock pro on the street or wheeling. Still get over 20 mpg highway and 400 miles per tank as long as I keep my foot outta the pedal. I vote 285s and I came from 265s, won't go back smaller. Go 285s and enjoy em man.

I’ve found it to be impossible to balance the duratracs that came on my 22. Vibration issues since day one

Just be realistic at the end of the day. For every 1 post that claims 285's and 20+ mpg, theres 20 claiming 285's and 15-16mpg. There are way too many factors from person to person that determine their mpg, but its truthfully safe to say that if you want to go from a stock wheel/tire to a 285 with a more aggressive tread pattern, you should expect 2-3 mpg lost, trimming/cutting plastic possibly CMC, and more mods down the road to fix the drivability after it potentially tanks. The weight of the tire isn't the only factor to focus on. That being said, sounds like you want 285's, so just go for it. Just don't be surprised when you figure out you tried all you could do to convince yourself it was doable with no mpg loss or cutting and justify making the jump, but end up dropping mpg and need cutting lol. Its just part of it, and while you "may" get lucky and not rub or drop mpg significantly, the stats aren't on your side. Again, be realistic, but enjoy it and build it to what makes your heart happy! Smiles per gallon brother.

Exactly. I think I'm pretty set on going for the 265's.

I wasn't shocked by it. Expected a loss when comparing the stock tire tread pattern (more street oriented) to the proper AT tread. Went from right around 20 with the stockers to 18 with the UT's. Now getting 17 after adding some weight for recovery gear and various other things I keep in the truck now. UT is a nice tire, great in snow and relatively comfortable riding. Just not a mileage tire.

I went through the same thing many years ago. I've not yet been in any situation that my 265's were not enough. I guess street driving aint so tough after all. Thought I'd be saving myself so much money with gas saved by not going to 285's and that aggressive looking AT's in the 32" flavor would give me that perfect balance of "cool" and "not a big hit on mpg". 16 mpg later, I've decided sucky gas mileage is sucky gas mileage; going 285 MT's next time, even if I don't "need" it or its impractical for daily driving; its what my heart always wanted.

I run over rocks 2-3 times a year. For the peace of mind go with E load tires.

Another side note is tires look bigger or smaller with different offsets and different style wheels. I know you have your wheel already but that is something to think about. For instance a 265 on a FN 5 star with a -25 off set looks bigger than the same size tire on the same wheel in a 0 offset.

Yeah, I'm going to say that won't work whatsoever, but you do you.
