So, political and safety rant BS aside, using a mercury switch underhood, what would a wiring diagram look like?

The mercury makes contact between two pins, just like a toggle or pushbutton.
Difference is you can put the switch on either the hot or the ground side... I'd put it on the hot side, so...

    Battery - - - - Fuse - - - - Switch - - - - Light - - - - Ground

Has anyone else tried a gas prop switch on Redline struts other than the banned guy above?

I contact Redline to see what they say.

Some newer cars if they are lucky to even have a hood light use a switch similar to a mercury switch. But use a ball in a tube to activate. Mine does and j have never noticed it flickering while driving.

I used a a magnetic Anzo brand switch. When the magnets are together they shut the hood lights off and when you open the hood and they come apart the lights come on. I also have an auxiliary switch to turn the lights completely off if I'm under the hood during the day. Simple and doesn't take up any room. Just two small magnets one on the top of the inside of the hood and the other on the piece of metal running across right in front of the battery

This the one? That's a good idea and pretty much foolproof.

Thanks for the idea. I found another one I'm going to try that's a little smaller. I'm looking for a low amp micro relay to tuck away just to be safe.

I ordered 4 of these to try out. I'll at least use two under the hood. Maybe put a couple down in the engine bay and see how they hold up to water. I don't see an IP rating or anything but they are cheap and look to be good quality.

My switch came in yesterday. I will post up some photos in case it may be useful to someone in the future.

The switch is very small :D

The magnet switch worked for a few minutes then quit working. I read in the reviews about others having the same issue.

So back to the normal switch for me.

This one works perfect still. And has an auxiliary switch to turn off during the day when the hood is up.
