I do not like the look of this at all.
How can the body hold all the weight of the complete engine? Without the frame?

Well, I think this is just a start. Now that the Techs and dealers gain experience on the frame swaps it is sure to bring on creativity on time savings. With the huge numbers of changes coming there is some serious time savings (AKA money) coming. Hopefully all these will assist and not be detrimental to the quality of the work. (i.e. other damage and workmanship issues.)

    - support engine to body.
    - Separate engine and Body and bed from frame .
    - lift body and push over to multiple techs for frame swap
    - Reverse process

IF they can hold more than body/bed and engine assembly to the side - they could make some serious money ....

    :D

Just went to change my oil for the first time after getting it back in February and realized that my TRD tow hook never got put back on my frame and all of hte plastic pop clips that hold the bottom of the bumper cover to the frame/bumper support are missing.

I just got my '05 back today with a new frame and new leaf springs. I have not had a chance to closely inspect it yet, but everything seems okay. It drives perfectly fine.

This just in! I was looking at the Toyota Owners site this past Sunday when I noticed this little gem (posted below) had popped up for my truck. I have been getting the middle finger from corporate for the last year on getting my frame replaced. Finally getting some love it would appear! Truck goes in (for the third time) on Friday.

its ok, i'm actually a little relieved to find the hole. my frame was looking so rough, i was worried they wouldnt find a hole when i took it in for inspection and i would just get the coating applied. a new frame might make me keep my truck for a little longer lol

I posted this in another thread... guy was having the same problem...

My frame passed inspection last year and had the coating applied in May. I was under there the other day putting on a skid plate and noticed that most the compound has flaked off. I'd say about 50-60% was exposed original frame.

I haven't read through this topic in almost a year and was curious if anyone else has had this issue... Will they reapply it? Is it my responsibility now? Thanks for any info.

I was under the impression the compound remains tacky, and shouldn't flake off. Maybe they never properly prepared the frame, and applied the compound over the existing rust :notsure:

Yeah the compound was tar like... Could swipe it with a finger and ruin your clothes. It remained wet to the touch all summer and fall and I didn't really look at it in the winter. Now it's heavy flaked off so apprently is actually dried... Just took like 8 -10 months. I'm getting curious about this because I am losing my rust protection!

    A Few Questions??

Did the Dealer do this -or sub it out to a local shop??

Do you have any info on the coating used?? Perhaps the coaters used a sub for the coating ??

And of course, a severely rusted frame with little to no prep would not hold on regardless of the compound.

I'd check on the above and contact Toyota Corp directly to see if you cand get this checked /fixed ....

It was the compound used for the Limited Service Campaign issued by Toyota. I got the letter in the mail about a year ago and scheduled it at a Toyota dealer the next town over like a week later. It was Toyota's issued compound. I believe Massachusetts was one of the first states to receive the notice.

Not exactly sure what the coating is, but it is very similar to tar or like a thick black grease coating. The same thing everyone else had done to their frames through the bulletin.

I wouldn't say my frame is "severely" rusted... as the vehicle spent almost all of it's life in California, or else it probably wouldn't have passed being a 2006 in Massachusetts and all. It's got a good decent amount of surface rust, but nothing rotted.

I'm starting to believe that maybe the surface prep was poorly done and isn't holding onto the compound very well anymore. I'll try and get some pics here soon. Thanks.

Do yourself a favor (if you had not already) and come to the realization that the frame will come in when it comes in. Mine's been at the dealer since Christmas, four months later, still no frame. There are several dozen Tacoma's sitting at that dealership alone waiting for frames. I think I read somewhere in this thread a dealer was still waiting for a frame on a truck that was left in October or November.
Do I particularly care it's taking a long time? No, I've been in brand new loaner cars since then and saving money on gas. It could take another six months, is what it is.
Oh, the last I was told is they think the frame will be in sometime in May, originally it was expected in April. The dealers are at the mercy of when they are shipped the frame so they can only guess at time frames.
    Good luck

oh im in the same boat. i'm in no rush, when they get it they get it. they said that if something happens and it doesnt come in before my inspection is up, just bring the truck there and they will get me a loaner car.

I bought my brother-in-law's 2007 taco in March and was showing a buddy the truck yesterday. He told me about the rust recall as his taco has been at the dealer since January. My buddy though said they had to keep his truck and he has been driving a loaner van since then. I'm not sure if I should take mine in now as I use it to tow my camper and carry my surfboards and have a number of camping trips planned for the summer. For a loaner would they have to give me one that could tow my pop-up camper? If not, I might wait until November to get checked. I'm in Richmond, Va and the truck was in East Tennessee for the past 8 years.

I'm in Richmond as well and if you need your truck this summer I wouldn't take it in for the recall yet. Dropped mine off early February with Haley Toyota and I'm still behind 7-8 Tacomas that were there before mine. I'll be lucky if I get it back before July at this point. I'm in the same boat as I'm going camping and will need a truck. I would be surprised if the dealers aren't telling customers now that the wait is 6-8 months.

Thanks R0dzilla - My buddy's truck is at Haley also. I think I will wait until November after camping/surfing/fishing season. Man that would suck if they kept my truck and didn't give me another truck with a hitch.
