Kote your 2015 right away. Toyota hasn't learned anything in the last 10+ years so if you don't you'll be looking for a new frame by 2018.

;) I know right? On the other hand, this 2007 isn't showing much frame damage so I'm fortunate that it's not going to be a replacement (yet!) but good point... yes, get the new one totally covered with quality stuff and not worry in the coming years.

Why can't they just switch to aluminum or galvanize the damned frames!

Just got my quote to two-step paint the whole truck including a color wet-sand for mirror finish and 4 coats of sanded/buffed clear.... $4,400.00 to get the '07 back to high gloss. Almost 8 yrs old... OEM TRD wheels are falling apart, new (bigger) tires post-lift, complete OME suspension package, brake lines, etc.... All told(most of these are "wants"), looking at about $9k... Either this or sell it (NADA says $23,800 clean but I'd be happy around the $20k mark) and finance the difference on a new TRD Pro...

At least the frame will be coated and on the books for the next owner....

^ frames are dipped. dana dipping process got out of specification for a long time before it was discovered. who knows, bad prep, contaminated paint...whatever, it was bunk. Toyota sued Dana and dana paid toyota over 35 million regarding bunk frame corrosion protection. dana got out of the frame business a few years ago. 2009 and up frames should not have the issue as the frames are made by a much bigger and more world-wide frame maker. but anything can happen.

did toyota screw everyone intentionally NO !!! they sued the crap out the frame supplier and are replacing frames (and remember the old tacoma buyback at 150% book)

thinking about it...I almost hope my frame rots through in 5-7 years because a no-cost frame replace also replaces a lot of other stuff, basically making it way more solid for the long run....

on a side note, I have a 1999 4runner (since 1998) and I salt and snowbank bashed it since day one and almost never wash it, and that old underside is plenty rusty today, but no where near rust-through...the hitch however, is rotted straight through underneath and is now a complete C-channel instead of a box. but the 4runner frame itself...somehow hanging together

Meh, if (and when) my 2013 frame rust starts to actually be an issue, the truck will have been long gone!

half-assed job is understatement. i think if I got my 2 year old to hold can with spray she would do better.

OP call Toyota and send them pics. See what they say. Its possible corporate does not even know.

I dont know if there is a company in US that dips any vehicle (or part of it) in paint anymore. That went away some time ago with new EPA regulations. its all powder now.

This is all very interesting and it sounds like you know what U R talking about - that being said why are the trucks after 2009 having rust issues  Thanks for any enlightenment.

My 07 frame (Dana made) is not dipped in anything. Its electrocated with powder.
I have not see frame dipped frame since my 1994 LC. Even Domestics are all powder.

...how much weight all that thick goop adds and how it affects mileage???

Ira is submitting my '05 for a frame replacement. Amazing to think of myself as lucky for having a frame too bad for goopification!

On the side note there is simple test that anybody can do to see if his frame will crap out in the future. Simply find a spot with least paint on the frame, make it wet, put dime on it and use Ohmmeter to check if you have closed circuit with ground on the frame. If you do than your frame will rust like everybody's else because coating simply is not enough to shield metal.

That would be a sweet deal! But, they did this before they had viable replacement frames... now that these are readily available, we're SOL on that deal.

A guy I work with got that deal though on his 1995 basic 4x4.... They gave him $15,800 for it! He gave it back and drove off with a new Corolla S at the time....

Are the replacement frames made by Metalsa or backstock from Dana?

Holy shit guys.. I've had my '06 Taco sprayed with "corrosion free" every 18 months since new,,,

It looks better today than when it was new......!! My Corrosion Free guy said that my '06 was the only one that he has seen last this long.... (still looks like new)..

I am a real believer that if you live up in the great north...you gotta address the salt issue....

    Northern Auto Care
    corrosion Free

I'll be happy just getting a new frame put on. My '05 already failed inspection a couple months ago because of the frame so they better replace it. I guess I just have to wait for PA to get it's turn. I still don't have the campaign number for my vehicle.

I just scheduled my 2006 Tacoma appt with Ira Toyota in Danvers MA, what is the expected test to determine whether they reapply a coating or replace the frame? Do they still do a hammer test or is it just visual if they only see perforation?

I didn't witness the inspection so I'm unsure about the extent of it. They took about 40 minutes from the time they drove it out back until it reappeared. I was told the inspection would determine one of two outcomes: Undercoating or frame replacement. Mine came back cleared for undercoating.
