I thought I'd pass on a little information on the successful sale of my little, 2004 2WD Tacoma (4cyl, automatic transmission, no cruise control or electric windows) that might help someone price/sell their truck.

Under the post title "Advice on selling my 2004 Tacoma?" that I posted back in March (https://bit.ly/2VrXeFq), I got some advice to list my truck for sale for $7,500 as a starting point. Some folks thought that was too high for a starting price and that I'd likely only sell the truck for $3,000-$4,000. After looking at other listings online, I decided to list it on cars.com for $7,000. I wanted to pick a price that was a good price for me where someone would just say, "I"ll take it." I didn't feel like trying to eek every dollar out that perhaps I could.

My ad went live last Monday, June 3 and for the first few days, I got almost no inquiries but that all changed over the weekend.

I got my first interested buyer on Sunday who drove the truck, and liked it. He was looking at another Tacoma and said he'd get back to me with a decision. Sunday night, I got three (3) inquiries from cars.com and returned their calls Monday morning. One lady said her Husband wanted to know if he could come look at the truck right away, and I agreed.

As he was looking at my truck, I received another phone call on my cell phone and wanted to know if the truck was still available. They didn't ask to come see it right away, but as I was on the phone, within audible range of the guy who came over right away to look at the truck, he motioned to me to get my attention and said, "I'll make this easy on you...if this truck drives the way it looks...I'll take it!." We made arrangements to meet in a few hours and he said he'd bring me the full $7,000.

We met at my bank later and I handed the teller a stack of $100 bills which they fed through the cash counter. We finished the paperwork, the new buyer gave me a ride home and I think we're both happy. My (former) truck looks like it was purchased by a couple that will take great care of it and make a trip to Home Depot from time to time buying plants for his Wife and completing "honey-do" projects.

Listed for $7,000...sold for $7,000 in one week...no questions asked.

Now it's time to go shopping for a NEW, 3rd Gen. Tacoma. See you over on "the other side".

    :)

I think all of that is awesome; easy transaction, and you know if someone's willing to pay the money for it, they'll have no problem taking care of it the way it deserves.

You lost me at the last part I quoted though :crapstorm:

How many miles were on it? I notice it had a chrome grille. SR5 trim? Does it have intermittent wipers?

I love your truck! I’d add a ground-pounding stereo, but other than that I’d keep it stock.

You're going to miss the budget TCO of a nice 5 lug like that one.

I love mine, since I have no need for bigger, 4wd, dodads or electronic wizardry.

When I was shopping I'd have bought a 1st gen like yours if I could have found a nice one like that. Especially at that kind of $.

The only thing I'm surprised at here is that you didn't sell it for more. :)

I thought *hard* about pricing it higher and my sense is that I probably could have got *maybe* as high as $8,000 but that would be pushing the envelope.

When I was doing some research about other vehicles in my area, I saw some Pre-Runners with V6 for $8,500. Since mine had manual windows, no cruise-control, etc., I thought $7,000 would be fine for me. The little 2.4 motor doesn't have much power, especially when coupled with an automatic.

    Nice job Ed

A clean 1st gen is a commodity, people know they're awesome trucks and will pay for them. I bought mine 9 years ago from a private seller and gave him asking price because if I didn't the next person would.

Just a note to those people who take cash for ANY transaction - to be safe, meet at your bank and have the teller run every bill through their sorting machine which will automatically check for counterfeit bills.

Advice from someone who spent a few years working in the banking industry.

Not gonna lie, I have my eye on a 5lug 4banger like that for the exact same reason. Just an easy around town truck.
