So I was listening to a pod cast and they mentioned that old Sony psp batteries were exploding. I was like what? So feel into a rabbit hole and that for whatever reason I didn’t know this, these lithium batteries are in everything and they can explode into flames. Cargo planes will not carry them. Why the fuck do we use these?
    They are in my:
    Phone
    iPad
    PS3 and 4 controllers
    My electric tooth brush

are they safer than I think?

Various standards are set for them.

I can tell you I've seen pocket boosters explode and write off cars due to small fires.

I had one on a plane awhile back in 2015 as a battery bank, but they smartened up and wont allow them anymore.

We use them because they currently have the highest energy density in battery form that is easily attained :) FWIW, any battery can explode into flames if you puncture the casing and short out the cells:

Gasoline is still a fire hazard.

I get it if its punctured, but its the fact that these batteries can swell up an possibly explode on their own, or explode out of nowhere:

After video footage showing Ceelo Green collapsing onto the floor after a cellphone seemingly exploded in his hand went viral Saturday, the singer is speaking out about the incident.

The singer took to Saturday evening to tell fans that the footage was fake and that he wasn't harmed.

"I just want to let everybody know that I am alive and I'm well and I'm OK," he said. "Truthfully, I'm really upset that anybody had to be emotionally disturbed by what they saw today."

Swelling and exploding isn't unique to Lithium batteries. The big difference is the amount of energy stored in a Lithium battery.

I worry more about hot-rodded vapes, but then again, I don't vape:

I keep my hobby lipos in a fireproof jacket and then inside a specially marked ammo can. as well as store them at 30% charge as recommended.

I run lithium batteries on 2 of my bikes. They are extremely small and weigh almost nothing compared to lead acid / AGM types of similar power and capacity. But they need more tightly controlled voltage regulation or you get the melting/burning/exploding events.
