I have this little red light next to my steering wheel and i dont know what it is. I dont think its a security system or anything like that because i did not get a key fob when i bought the truck, i just got a key. Any thoughts?

Probably an aftermarket security system. That is where my light was on my '91 back in the day...

Could be the "Theft Deterrent System" or TDS that was installed by some dealers.
    The fob looks like this:

You're gonna have to figure out what brand it is first, then might be able to get a fob to make operational.

Could be "valet mode" indicator. Maybe trace the wire back to its origin. Might lead to behind the kick panel.

Have the same light. It's for the security system.

I have the same light in the same spot. Had the truck for 6 or 7 years now and it's been on the whole time. I didn't get a security fob either, but it's part of some aftermarket/dealer installed security system. No idea if the system works or not, but that little red light glows like a boss, 24/7.

Yep. No idea why. There is a small alarm module under the dash by the fuses, but it's never gone off or any other sign it even has power.
Just the ever-burning eye of Sauron.

I hate electrical work, but one of these days I need to dig in there, tear it out and throw it in a volcano.

What do you recommend because I have this little red light on my Manuel 98' Limited V6 4X4? Should I get a whole new security system or can I just buy a fob? Sorry for digging this up but I have not found any solutions thus far.

I believe the Toyota Theft Deterrent System (TDS) was a dealer installed option on my 1999 SR5 with the TRD package.

My red light is a valet mode switch that turns the TDS on and off. When the switch is in, the red light stays ON and the TDS is in the alarm systems OFF valet mode.

If you have the Toyota dealer installed TDS you might want to contact your dealer and ask about purchasing a new FOB like the one in the photo and programming it to your truck. I don’t use my system daily, however when I disconnect my battery, pushing the red button on the FOB that unlocks the doors is the only way I can turn my alarm off (horn beeping) and start my vehicle. *after just now reading the TDS Owners Manual, I’ve learned I can stop the horn from beeping and start my truck without the FOB by doing the following: open the drivers door using the door key alarm will sound, make sure the valet switch is is in the off (out) position, then turn the ignition key on. Press and release red valet switch to the on (in) position. The alarm will disarm and the truck can be started.
