Hi guys - I did several forum searches and found a few pertinent threads on my issue:

    Parking brake issue '05 6spd
    2005 prerunner parking brake suckage
    DIY Rear brake replacement?

I found a few helpful tips in each of these, so I'm hoping that with time, the auto-adjusters will improve the low response in the parking brake since the hubby, his friend and I changed out the pads front and rear.

We had the drums off three times in total in the last week or so, but it wasn't until I read that the best way to re-adjust the rear brake settings, including the parking brake, was to drive backward at a good clip and bear down hard on the pedal. Not quite to skidding, but pretty close. It wasn't until I did that a half dozen times that I felt any response at all with the parking brake. Until then, there was nothing. That first time I pulled it, it was almost like that scene in Airplane where Striker yanked out a similar handle in the cockpit when landing:

Anyway, in the first thread I listed, a poster mentioned that the auto-adjuster works every time the parking brake handle is pulled, but only on some models. Is there a list somewhere, or how can I tell if this is the case with my '05 Prerunner?

Are there other steps or methods I might have missed?

I should add that the hubby would very much like to see a close up picture under the drum, in the event that things didn't get put back together as they should have... but I think a pic is probably going to be a long shot.

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

It is obvious you did not properly adjust the rear brakes when you installed them. Wait and I will post the Correct Method...

    From the service manual:

ADJUST REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE

    (a) Provisionally install the hub nuts.

    (b) Remove the hole plug, and turn the adjuster to expand the shoe until the drum locks.

    (c) Using a screwdriver, release the adjuster 15 notches.

    (d) Install the hole plug.

You will find this makes a lot of difference.

Well crap. I have the customtacos page with all the PDF's for the '05 service manual, but I missed this one!

Thank you SO MUCH Jimmyh, I'll let you know how it goes, hopefully tomorrow once we can get that side off again. Much appreciated!

It's been a week, and we haven't been able to get that side jacked up again, but still hoping this weekend or the coming week.

I didn't mention it in my first post, but with the all-around brake pad/shoe replacement, my brakes weren't quite where they should be; a little squishiness, but have MUCH improved since I wrote last. That self-adjustment stuff is pretty amazing. The parking brake still isn't there yet, though. Going to be changing the oil this weekend, and might try to finagle that rear shoe adjustment myself.

Thanks for the help and for your continued interest!
