It is an interesting question compared to the 1st to 2nd gen switch. In that case there were a lot of obvious differences in the *type* of truck they were. So in 2008 the choice between a 2005 and 2004 was really looking at two different kinds of trucks and so it would seem the 2004 had its own set of advantages and trade-offs compared to the 2005.

For the 2015 and 2016 the trucks really are basically the very same *type* of truck. Will there be people who will actively look for a used 2nd gen instead of a 3rd gen? Well, if there is some sort of reliability disaster with the 3rd gen I suppose so, but otherwise I don't see an obvious reason to chose a used 2nd gen over a used 3rd gen the way someone might actually prefer a 1st to a 2nd.

It will all come down to personal preference. Someone who does not want all the tech upgrades will go for the 2nd Gen; either new or used. Same for those who have been waiting for the newest gizmos and upgrades, they will opt for the new 2016. I have not owned a Tocoma yet but am going to buy one. When I get the opportunithy to sit in it, check out what is has to offer for technical, mechanical, etc., and then taking it out on a drive will determine what I get. I may even be swayed to modify my price limit if I really think it is worth it.

No way. Sure there are those who will early adopt. And what they get for that are things like broken engine mounts, bent tailgates, bent shift forks and worn synchros (like they did with first year 2nd gens).

It takes time to work out the kinds on any new model, and early adoption of a new model is rarely (if ever) in the buyer's favor over the long term. Tacoma owners generally tend to be fairly conservative buyers ... that is, they keep their trucks for a long time & don't necessarily see new technology (read: more things to break) as a bonus in any sense.

On gas mileage .. Don't get me wrong. I think it's GREAT they're improving mpg. About damn time (if only we'd get the diesel). But year in year out, my 2nd gen averages 20mpg. If I drive 10,000 miles a year at 20mpg then gas at $3.00/gallon costs me $1,500/year. If they boost mpg on the 3rd gen a full 25% to 25mpg, that would save me $300/yr in gas. If you can (responsibly) afford a $34k truck, $300/year is probably not something you think about much.

It is the 11th year Toyota has used the same transmissions, same engines in the 2nd gen. That means there's a HUGE used parts market for these things. And that means a long life, long time on the road (provided we don't all rust out). Trust me .. the 2015s will do just fine.

I may not be the first to say this... But is anyone else disappointed at how 1/2 ton ish and bulky this new tacoma has become?

I'm not, it's about the same size as the 2nd gen. The GM twins look more 1/2 ton ish when I had a chance to see them in person.

I just realized how caught up I got in all this excitement... It’s amazing how much time I have spent (waisted?) reading this thread this last two days. Honestly, and with all due respect, I could care less who likes or dislikes the ’16 Taco for one reason or another. It’s all personal opinion. I’m freakin’ getting one! The fall can’t get here soon enough.

    Carry on... :proposetoast:

    Agreed!!

When the 2nd gens came out, it was a lot of the same - people didn't like it. It grew on all of us!!

I'll probably wait until 2018 or so - but I'll be looking forward to reading the info/feedback from others. When I bought my 07 new- It was $29,000. This new truck - fully loaded? Oh yeah..I can picture $40k.

But hey...if you want a 4WD truck with all the bells & whistles available that we've never had before...You wanna spoil yourself. At least, I do!! I've had enough Toyota's to stay firm with my choice simply for the reliability - regardless of what it has or doesn't have. I'm curious to see what colors are offered.

Man spent half hour catching up today and much dissapointment there are still no firm specs on anything in regards to new Tacos. When the heck are we going to know exactly what motor model, tranny, suspension and sorts? Day the public is allowed in???

One thing I'll bet on is that a large amount of what everyone is oooogling over is only going to be on the limited. Which I personally have no interest in all the chrome etc. Some of the fandangles you bet buy unlikely one will even be able to choose as options in TRD etc...

I'm not sure what the big cry out for the diesel engine is for... In Indiana diesel is still almost $4 in some places. Gas locally is $1.64 here so ultra is right under $2.00!!! I may not be very good with math but that would have to be one extremely fuel efficient diesel engine to make me swap from regular gas. I am however extremely intrigued to see if they increase the size of the gas tank. If the rumor gets out that more info will be released at the Chicago auto show, I will do my best to get up there on opening day and snag some more photos and info. I'm only about an hour south so would be a fun little city road trip. I will be eagerly waiting!

Ya I bet they still hold their value, last of the generation that a lot of people love, just like how the last of the 1st gens in good shape fetch a good premium.

Any thoughts on the ugly number layout on the speedo/tach? I've been waiting for years for Gen 3 and love the double cab limited BUT those instruments are FUGLY

Flawed logic, the 2004's didn't rapidly depreciate any faster when the 2005's came out, same with other brand when they do new model updates. The 2015's are the last of a proven platform, that will be worth while to some people. Maybe not 5 years from now, depends on how this new truck pans out. My buddies 2004 access cab just sold for $15k with 131k on the odometer. A 10 year old truck!

maan if that hood pops open that easily there's something wrong with it. might as well be the first recall on it.

So... They took away the 4.0l and put the Camry 3.5l v6 in it? Why not use the newer 4.0l like the 4Runner?

It's kind of hard to base potential 2nd gen resale on how the 1st gens have been doing because good first gens are harder to come by. Especially because of the large frame recalls and buybacks. The "good" condition and low mileage ones are worth an arm and a leg considering they are 10+ yr old trucks. I've seen 01-04 4x4 Double cabs listed at 18K in the GA vicinity. Not that people pay that full price because those are at dealerships but STILL. It's nuts. 2nd gen situation is a little different, though I highly doubt 2nd gens will take much of a hit on resale.

Agree maybe the first couple years. But give it 4-5 years and I bet they hold some good resale. At least Im hoping but then again I know I'll keep mine for awhile cause for some reason I love these trucks.

Makes me happy to have a 5.7l for sure... Pretty soon they'll get rid of that too, and tell us the 4.0l in the tundra is "more efficient." Whatever...
