Wrong..... all we know at this point is its 3.5L V6 with atkinson / otto cycle and direct injection.

Camry 3.5L (2GR-FE) does NOT have direct injection
lexus / hilander hybrid motor 3.5L (2GR-FXE) only does atkinson and as far as i know DOES NOT have direct injection
Leuxs 3.5L (2GR-FSE) has direct injection and dual vvti.... but does NOT have atkinson cycle capabilities.

If i had a hunch they used the 2GR-FSE as a base, and modified the VVTi to allow a wider range of movement to allow for the simulated atkinson cycle. (probably based on the lexus 2.0l turbo motor tech aka Dual VVTiW)

The motor in the new tacoma is likely going to be labeled with the 2GR prefix but a new sub designation. ALSO... the 1GR is the motor the 2GR is based off of.... same bore smaller stroke. But as stated we only know the above from the first sentence of this post.... NOTHING MORE so stop saying its a "car motor" and saying thats a "dumb decision" because I can bet toyota would not jeopardize or go backwards in hp torque or mpg.

Unless they do like the 4runner and add something like the Premium option to trim levels like the TRD off road, you probably have to get the limited to get leather/softex, heated side mirrors, sunroof and dual climate control.

I've been shopping a loaded Chevy Colorado for 3 months now. Just about fully loaded they are 32kish for the V6 crew cab with 4x4. Kinda hard to believe Toyota would price their truck much higher than that. I'm waiting for the Taco.

Loaded canyon comes to 40k. Toyota already sells without incentives every tacoma with trds selling 32-35k. New tacoma has a lot of extra tech that costs money and they're not going to eat into their current profit margins. Most of us agree I bet an equipped off road double cab with tech that we saw will cost 36-38k. And toyota knows they will sell every one of them.

They'll have about a 5-7% increase minimum and for the first few months, most dealers wont stray to far off MSRP. Common Toyota practice.

I agree for what I have seen companies uses same engines on cars that in Trucks but they Are tune diferently so they serve their purpose. I use to have a 93 Nissan King Cab Pickup with the KA24E if I remember and the Nissan 240 uses the same Block/Engine but they perform very different on each application.:D

Same discussion on the Colorado-canyon forum, car motor vs truck motor. Some one enlighten me! What criteria define at "truck" motor from a "car" motor in the context of the light duty pickups we are interested in.

Jim, you silly guy. Obviously, it's defined by some of the experts on here who own Tacoma's, (and some who don't) that hate everything Toyota does. I hope that helps. :D

Yes I am, thank you for noticing! I'll be back but right now I have to go to work driving my real truck motor 4.0 to get to my real truck motor V-10 E-450. No car motors for me today!

Truck motors come with special testosterone injection systems and include words like "power" and "stroke" in their naming conventions

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Truck engines are designed for different purpose so process and numbers are different. Everythign is different in them. They are designed to work at lower RPM's more efficiently and far longer.
So for example simple things people take for granted.
    1. Split oil pan that uses baffles to keep oil at the sump when you climbing or driving down at high angles.
    2. Thicker head gasket so when you tow heavy trailers when its cold you dont blow one (Toyota went cheap on that in 2005 trucks and look how many people end up wit hblown engine)
3 Coolant channels are wider, designed to move more volume , same with water pump
    4. Oil channels wider designed to move more volume same oil pump
    5. Bigger /thicker seals
    6. Bigger main bearings
    7. Even starter is bigger designed to fire up in temperatures that would kill car. That also means your electrical system has to be upgraded to handle more AMPs hence why Tow package has 130 AMP alternator.

    etc etc etc
Can you put Sienna engine in your truck ?
    Yes
Will it work through warranty ?
    Probably
    Will it last ?
    Nope.

the leading minor of order 1 is not positive definite.
I bet all that "tech" actually doesn't cost a great deal to implement. Plus, considering all that Toyota is "saving" on stuff that hasn't seemed to change much (cab, probably chassis, bed, etc.), their margins will be just fine, I'm sure. This is didn't take nearly the resources as did the redesign from Gen 1 to 2. The Limiteds will be up there for sure, but these will be a hard sell if they're $3-4k more expensive than Gen 2's across trim levels, as you seem to be suggesting.

I bet at least a 2k price increase. They are not going to cut into their current margins, they sell every current 2nd gen without the additional projector headlights, crawl control, dual auto climate, etc. Those additional options/additions still make the overall cost of production more compared to now, it may not be 3-4k more but you have to be kidding yourself it they don't increase the price to match their current profit margin.
