$6-800 a month for rent is cheap. If you can’t afford that you can’t afford a $35000 truck.

I know it's not the fun answer but from what I've seen of several family members and friends yeah...

Of course that's not going to be true of everybody. However, most people at that point in their lives are already dealing with enough becoming a self-sufficient person that adding that stress can easily push things to the limit.

Being a car guy and an engineer it was super painful not to go crazy and buy a fancy new ride as soon as I started working in early 20s. I bought a house instead and had to drive around in a very old Nissan Stanza for a while to make this happen. Got pretty lucky with how the real estate went up here and was in a brand new WRX not too long after. If I could give anyone advise about this, it would be: property first, cars second.

So you think $600-$800/month for rent is high?? That is low most places......could buy a house around here for those kind of payments.

I kind of agree with that - about your post! Not so much stupid, but not logical/realistic.

On the bright side, if your girlfriend is ok with this crazy ass plan, then she seems really cool. So even though she'll probably break up with your cheap ass while you live out of a pickup truck on a ~$70k salary, you'll have the knowledge that she was the one.

This is a joke I assume, but I will answer with the formula that the truely impressive class of cheap engineers has found. I aspire, but never really would qualify myself.

    The aerospace 'job shopper'

Known for impressive cheapness, (and an awful lot of people avoiding paying child support)

    Important things to note.
Engineers get a lot more money as contractors than employees. You get a lot more raises by moving on to a new job than getting years in a place. So keep shopping for a new higher paying job always. Make even more money by working 1099 (no benefits).

So, buy a small travel trailer on craigslist. Park it at work. Be looking for a new job ALL the time. When you find one, for even 1% more than your current rate, hitch up and move that TT.

I guess if I wanted a house it would make sense. But who knows what happens in the future. I don't want two 15 year house payments at the same damn time.

Not too sure about the AC situation but you could park at an RV park if your truck is setup with a RTT. Some RV parks allow it, the monthly cost isnt too bad and you get washer/dryer, pool, wifi, etc.

Something to think about. In-laws saw a few tacoma pals doing this. Otherwise, you'll need to get creative about A/C and such.
