Load Range "C" (OR Close) off-road tire options..?

    Privet. ;) I was actually just up in Anson on Saturday, picking up a load of fresh pork from Kniffen's. Used to camp up on the Austins all the time, too. That huge logjam still on the lower end of Little Austin?

    Duratracs are definitely better in the snow. I rarely even need to put my truck into 4x4 with them mounted because they grip so well, and I don't have to worry about the GF making it home in lousy weather because of them (that and the Tacoma's are tanks in the snow anyway).
    The trick with the Duratracs seems to be finding them right now. GY's backordered a lot of the sizes lately. We're completely sold out of the most popular sizes, and Goodyear says we probably won't see any more until this spring. :frusty:

    Yes, but not under the same conditions. It's not the same scale. When you go LT, the scale assume that your truck is loaded all the time, so the wear is more considerable thus max load is less. P tires assume of a max load once in a while, thus more load is allowed. LT tires construction is different.

    When it's time to change my truck tires, I will be going with the Cooper AT or Toyo AT.
    I also think a C rated tire would do it for me.

    I run a winter and a summer set of tires (it's the law up here) so my choice might be different than yours, but I just received my new set of Cooper AT3's LT265/70/17 in load C. Can't wait to put them on. I already upgraded my winter tires to 265/70/17, so I know what I'm getting into. Basically, that increase in size will decrease your shown speed and travelled distance by 3% and decrease your fuel economy by 5% (when you factor in the 3% off from the speedo). I don't mind. These measurements are on a 3rd gen with light (40 lbs) tires with not much rolling resistance. My new tires are 47 lbs and have a bigger rolling resistance (bigger thread) so I might loose a bit of fuel economy there as well.

    That beeing said, I choose the AT3 because I usually do 100 miles of highway before I get to 10 miles of off road and they are said to be one of the best compromise. I will comment on this when the snow melts...

    So with the Coopers, are the S/T MAXX's significantly heavier than the ATs? I know the ATs are cheaper. Seems like the MAXXs would be overkill for most of us?

    For the same size (LT265/70/17), I believe the ST MAXX is 56-57lbs and the AT3 load C is 47lbs. Load E is 50lbs. P tires are around 40lbs.
    Yes, I figured it was overkill for me because I drive a lot of highway and ST Maxx are not made for that in my opinion (noise, rolling resistance and braking distance were big factors for me). In my case I choose the AT3.
    But I live in suburbia. If you are in the country and drive dirt roads more than pavement or if you go overland a month each year then it might be for you.

    I have about 5K miles on my Kelly Safaris. They seem to work pretty well (reasonably quiet, decent wear etc.)
    and I am happy with them.

    Also FWIW, I think that Goodyear owns Kelly Tires and that these get manufactured in a Goodyear factory.

    Just an FYI for anybody considering the toyo AT2's, they are good tires at first but after a single year I'm becoming disappointed in mine. Less than 20000 miles and they are wearing much faster than I thought they would, the sipes in the middle of each tread block aren't full depth so there are much less edges now and the wet weather performance has decreased a lot. They did ok in the few snow's we've had this winter but I'm getting rid of them this summer. They are good A/T tires, just not great. If anybody in the MA/RI/CT area is looking for a cheap set of tires for offroading I'll be selling mine this summer, probably around $50 each.

    picked up a set of duratracs 265/75/16 load C, a week ago. so far so good, got into some mud over the weekend, they did great. I am hoping to get some good life 50K + out of these, will keep em aired up and rotated. slight more noise that the stock rugged trails, but not bad at all, just a slight hum at speed.

    I think so, only have a couple tanks ran through though, I may have dropped about 1 - 1.5 mpg.
