My buddies truck on 35's claims he gets 21 mpg. That's about 3 better then me and his tires are 4 inches taller..

I swapped to 17 TRD wheels just for that purpose. The KO2s are 8lbs lighter than the same size 265/75/16s.

Depends on the wheel you are starting with.

Toyota went through great lengths to make the wheel/tire setup on the TRD off-road very light. The SR5 and Sport wheels are heavier than the off-road TRD wheels, so you could even save weight on the wheel in addition to the tires if you are starting with one of those. The 16" TRD off-roads weight 23lbs. You can get the 17" TRD Pro wheels for $161 that weigh 25lbs. So the net savings would be 6lbs per corner if you have TRD off-road wheels.

I did a writeup on wheel tire options for that size to keep weight to a minimum here:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ior-beadlock-style-wheels-on-a-tacoma.381030/

Edit: Here is the cheapest I have seen the 25lb 17" Pro wheels:

    Too few to list.
I did some wheel weight research before purchasing. I knew the TRD OR were about 22-23lbs so I wanted to stay at or lighter as A/T tires are heavier. Settled with MK6 at 22lbs.

FYI, stock BFG rugged trails in 265/70r16's are 38lbs.

Yep, and a 265/75R16 KO2 weighs 53lbs. That is a crazy 15lb increase over stock!

Hence the importance of trying to keep the weight gain to a minimum.

I was looking at the KO2's as they look good in person and wanted to give them a try but they only come in Load E so they were out.

The steel wheel? I think those are close to around 32lbs.

Given the same height and width a heavier tire will always get worse mileage and cause more wear than a lighter tire. Taller tires will help with mileage for folks who spend a lot of time on the highway and freeway (fewer starts and stops) because they run at a lower RPM. The rest of the claims, while completely sincere, are just mental error. Physics is physics regardless of what somebody perceives happens with their small and inconsistent sample size of miles driven.

Don't know why but 235/85-16 and 255/85-16 seem to come almost exclusively in ten ply. Dunno why. If I could find a C or D rating on a 255/85 that I wanted I would have taken the plunge on 33s.

Not sure that is precise weight but I do know the steel wheels hover around 30lbs.

    I have BFG Ko2s 10 ply and duratracs 10ply both 265/75/16.
    KO's are on trd wheels
Duratracs on American racing Ventura wheels.
Didn't weigh anything but KO's on trd wheels feel heavier. I have a 4 banger 5 speed better mpg/power with the KOs using dash command connected to obd2 port. My experience with both hope the duratracs are better in snow than the KO's as they will be my winters.
