You need to figure out which jurisdiction responds to your property when you call 911, then find their local ordinances and check them out...also make sure state laws dont prohibit it

check with your local pd. they would be able to tell you for sure.

are you in city limits? i googled missouri gun laws, and it seems like there are numerous city ordinances against firing on private property inside city limits.

other than that, this is what i found at this site (but there may be more laws than this, you should verify for yourself): http://crime.about.com/od/gunlawsbystate/a/gunlaws_mo_2.htm

It is unlawful to possess or discharge a firearm or projectile weapon while intoxicated.
It is unlawful to discharge a firearm within one hundred yards of any occupied schoolhouse, courthouse, or church building.
It is unlawful to discharge or shoot a firearm into a dwelling house, a railroad train, boat, aircraft, or motor vehicle, or any building or structure used for the assembling of people.
It is unlawful to discharge or shoot a firearm at a mark, at any object, or at random, on, along or across a public highway or to discharge or shoot a firearm into any outbuilding.
It is unlawful to discharge or shoot a firearm at or from a motor vehicle, while within any city, town, or village, and to discharge or shoot a firearm at any person, or at any other motor vehicle, or at any building or habitable structure, unless the person is lawfully acting in self-defense.
It is unlawful to exhibit, in the presence of one or more persons, any weapon readily capable of lethal use in an angry or threatening manner.

many local gov'ts have online-accessible GIS viewers for property/parcel/tax data... look your residence up there, see where the city boundaries are, etc..

Ok, so I live outside of city limits. Now what? I live in a "neighborhood" out in the country. I have a backyard though that goes into a wooded area (I would still have a mound of dirt for a necessary backdrop). I own a little over a half acre is about it as well.

    1. establish you are in an unincorporated area, w/ no local prohibition (or state??? prohibition) for discharge firearm..

    2. establish that the you have an adequate backstop and bullets will not leave your property... now the wooded area,.. who owns it?... if it's a neighboring farmer that owns it, he probably won't appreciate you shooting into his property..
