Hey everyone, got a check engine light the other day. After scanning it I got P0456 (small Evap leak) I’ve got a gas cap on order that will be here next week but today I went searching for the EVAP test port that I’ve seen in most cars but I can’t seem to find it on this one. Would anybody know where I can tap into the Evap system to smoke test it? Amateur mechanic here so pictures are greatly appreciated! :D got a smoke machine on order as well. Thanks

I’ve seen smoke test kits that have a plug for the fuel fill cap that you can smoke test through. Don’t know where to get them though

I’ll have to give that a look but I am curious, Is there a spot in the engine bay at all though? I am hoping to tap into the engine bay and leave the fuel cap off so that I know when the system is full of smoke when it starts coming out of the fuel cap (and I can test the fuel cap too with it in place)

You pull off the line to the evap purge valve.

There is no port, Toyota never intended the system to be checked with 3rd party tools.

Also you need to make sure the vent valve is either closed, or blocked with a cap if you use the smoke machine, or it will bellow out the gas cap vent and look like a major leak.

Awesome! Thanks! You wouldn’t happen to have a pic or location of the Evap purge valve?

So thought I’d give an update and ask a question. Got around to smoking testing the truck today. Just as I feared I nicked one of the Evap lines underneath the truck bed. Little backstory, I installed a bakflip tonneau cover a couple weeks ago and I was enlarging the hole in the back of the bed on the driver side for the hoses that come with the cover. I got the code shortly after. I was hoping I didn’t nick the line with my spade bit but looks like I did. Looked through the hole in the bed and I can see a wisp of smoke coming up from a hose. My problem is is that the gas tank is right there too. Any tips on getting to those Evap lines without dropping the tank? Or if I have to drop it. Any links to the FSM that can show me how to do that? Bad day as I also saw that my rear diff is leaking too. Oooffff! Here are some pics of where the leak is…

image quality is not the greatest but you can see the mesh of the hose right there. Smoke was coming out of that hose

Well at least you found the leak. I had a similar code on a Chrysler van for several years.....and ironically found the source of the problem by looking at the test port hose...which had a bunch of cracks all around the plastic test port fitting but on the bottom side.

Probably easier to remove the bed of the truck... if you have some helping hands.

Ya, that sucks. Those little leaks are a pain in the butt. This may be the opportunity to install one of those LRA 33 gallon gas tanks though

Oh wow… just watched the video. Ya I think this may be the way I go. Whole heck of a lot easier. Will have to decide if I want to upgrade my tank or not. But thank you for this!

Can you access the hose by removing the rear driver-side tire and wheel well liner? Seems like a lot of surgery to fix a hose.

I tried looking through there to see if I can get to it. It didn’t look like it was totally accessible but I’ll try taking the tire and liner off and see if that changes. Thanks for the suggestion!

If the tank has to come "down" to get to the hose, sometimes you can just lower it a few inches and thus keep everything connected. Just make sure the tank is really low on fuel. Honestly I think pulling the bed off would be my last choice.

I am curious why you say the bed would be your last choice? Everything I’ve read so far makes it sound easier. My biggest concern is if there’s something I’m missing about the bed removal that makes it more Difficult. From what I saw, I need to take out the gas cap, Couple of bolts holding the filler neck, Tailgate stuff (camera and I have a pop n lock), unplug the outlet on the passenger side and uninstall, unplug and unclip taillight housings. Is the fuel tank easier than that? And would it give me Clearance? I’m up for whichever the easier approach is.

Also, does anyone have a part number for the evap lines? Gonna order all the hoses tomorrow so I can replace it all while I am in there
