a locking rear diff of your choosing that matches the gear ratios you have
and a way to activate it

if you mean an OEM toyota e-locker, then that, plus make sure the gears match,
and the dashboard and ecu wiring to go with it

so theoretically if I can find a totaled Off-road, i can take the diff from it and it should drop in? along with wiring and whatnot?

    yes

just confirm the gear ratios so you don't blow up the tcase --if this is a 4wd--.

2wd doesn't matter, but you just gotta make sure if you have 4wd that the the rear you put in, matches
should be on the door sticker or listed somewhere on this site.

I might be dumb but don't you need the whole axle? I know with first gens you do since the motor is external. Which is why some choose the easier route of an air locker.

Sport and off-road models have different size rear ends, you can't just take the third member from one and swap it to the other.
Please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the sport has a larger rear end.

I read on lowrange off-road web site that the e-locker has 8" ring and pinion gears while the non e-locker has 8.4" ring and pinion gears. So I don't think you can just get the e-locker 3rd member and bolt it up to a sport axle. You might have to do an axle swap to get the Toyota e-locker in a sport. I'm in the same boat.:frusty:

Found a sweet mechanical conversion for the e-locker so you don't have to wire everything up. Replaces all the wiring and actuator to a mechanical setup. You just have to mount a lever in the cab.

A Lunch box locker is a cheaper route. There are several companies out there that make them.

Yes you would need the whole axle, the sport diff is a different size than the OR one.

Be easier to get an ARB air locker installed in your current diff

Make sure you do your research on lunchbox lockers if that's the route you go. They're not as street friendly as an LSD or e-locker/air locker setup. Lots of clicks and pops during turns and in parking lots. They're not for everybody.

any way you can link me to exactly what i would need? I'm not a mechanic, in fact i barely know anything about the vehicle other than how to have fun in it. My old 2004 was an off road and the locker helped me in the snow. I frequent West Virginia and where my place is, the roads are downright sketchy as fuck when it snows.

For snow country the ARB is your best bet, you can turn it off when it's slick & your truck will run 100% like it does stock. Turn it on for the trail and it's locked instantly. http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-788575-tacoma-8-4-non-eld-t100-tundra-3rd.html This company will build the whole unit and ship it to you, then you can do the swap and ship them your stock unit for a core exchange refund, I think it's $400 back once they receive yours. Tons of people on this site have used them, good folks. You'd also need an air compressor or air tank permanently installed in the truck to run this unit. Probably about $1,500-2k to do it, depending if you DIY or pay a shop to bolt it all up.

If you have a different vehicle you can drive on the slick roads then lunchbox lockers are another option. They lock up when the throttle is applied, but spin the inside rear tire at the blink of an eye when you're making a turn. This is why they aren't suggested for slick roads. I live in So Cal and have driven once in the rain, it wasn't fun but I made due. Ice would be a deal breaker for me. These lockers only run about $400 and installation can be DIY with some how-to's or a shop can do it in a few hours for a penny.

The ARB air locker is selective just like the e-locker. Just flip a switch and you're locked, flip it again you're unlocked.

There is a new aftermarket e-locker I read about recently for Tacomas, made by Harrop I think...they were only making them for Hilux's but they are selling them for Tacomas now through another company if I remember right. Can't remember the name though...

Ok next question, I see an entire kit and compressor on LowRange, what gear ratio do you guys think would be best for both worlds? On and off road. Currently running 275-70 KO2s
