Lock doors while via fob or door handle while engine running?

Since my Tacoma doesn't have remote start, this morning I went out to start it up to let it warm up and clear the windshield. When I got out, I wasn't able to lock the doors via the FOB or the door handle.. it just gave me a long, solid beep (my Camry does this when you attempt to lock it with a door still open). I poked around in the settings but was unable to find a way to change this. Is this how it's intended to work, or am I missing something? I can understand not allowing the handle to unlock them while it's running (so people can't just come up and open your door at a stop light), but not being able to use the fob seems like an oversight. I realize the obvious solution is to just use the interior door lock switch before closing the door, but just wondering if the fob can do it.

You can't lock your door while it is running unless you are sitting in it.

Thanks for the verification. Seems kind of silly to prevent the FOB from being able to lock the doors. If I start my car in the morning and then forget to lock the doors when I get out, I don't want to put my coat back on and go back out to lock it.. would be great if I could just lock it with the remote.

that's what a remote start is for. or get the cylinder key version and lock the door with spare key.

You can lock the door with the extra key/fob in the drivers side door. I am going to get a blank key cut at the dealer just for the keylock on the drivers door next time I'm at the dealer. Less than $10.00 and it beats carrying both big key/fob's.

I would love a remote start, but unfortunately it didn't come on my vehicle. It just seems like a silly oversight to prevent the FOB from locking a running vehicle.. I can't think of a scenario where this would be beneficial.

I locked mine by rolling down the window and reaching in from outside to lock it, then I rolled the window up with the auto up function. However you'll have to use the key inside the key fob to unlock it as the key fob will not unlock it if the vehichle is running. I wish there was some reprogramming for this. Maybe someone with access to an up to date version of Techstream can chime in.

I agree with you G3Inferno,seems kind of silly all right. Can't do the remote start right now, spent what I had left on boards, flaps & mats. Why they ordered carpeted mats for an Off Road package is any body's guess, replaced them with the all weathers

I have one! I park the Taco at walmart ... it is running with wife inside 100F outside so Taco running with AC. I am in store getting my stuff then she texts me to pick up some makeup/cream whatever ... I have no idea what she exactly wants. She exits truck and locks the door with the door button and comes inside. We get small bottle of makeup for $65.00 that I am sure was made by a 200 year old elf and was sprinkled with wiffle dust. (Hence the expensive bottle).

We pay and head outside, I say give me the FOB, she says I don't have it. Where is it? ... I didn't touch YOUR STUFF! What you left it in the truck? I didn't touch it. Did you shut off the truck? I didn't touch it. Did you LOCK THE DOORS. YES of course - I'm not stupid.

I walk over to passenger door ... Yup it is locked ... check exhaust ... yup ... definitely running .... argh .. What are we gonna do now the spare FOB is at home.

So I was going to call someone ... when I thought ... I better check my door ... sure enough it was UNLOCKED .... whew ... glad someone didn't steal it!

Moral of the story .... don't buy makeup for your wife ... LOL.

Anyways, I now remove the key from the fob and I can lock it with the FOB inside .... either running or not.

Wait, so your wife locked it with the button inside on the door and it still didn't lock the driver's door? If that's true, that's ASININE. I often run in the store with wife and child in the vehicle and insist they lock the doors. If what you're saying is accurate, then that wouldn't be possible.

Sure it would ... shut off the Taco ... and it will lock .... my truck was running .... and it locked all doors except driver's door.

So this is a great discusson. I also REALLY need to know exactly what scenarios can have the truck running and lock or unlock the doors.

I do know for a fact; that the truck can be driven after it is started and the FOB is someplace else ... I parked my truck 500 yards away in my shop, I then shut it off .... then I needed to back my Taco up a little more. I needed the FOB to restart it ... So I had to walk back to the house and get the FOB from the front door as I forgot it with my house key in the lock.... DOH!

Start the vehicle. Remove key from fob. Lock the doors with door locks. The drivers door will not lock. Exit vehicle. Lock manually with key and fob in vehicle.

What you originally described is that you cannot use automatic locks (via fob, door handle, or button) while the vehicle is running and parked. That is a MASSIVE oversight, if that's the case. I don't want to have to remove my key, and physically engage the lock cylinder from outside the vehicle when I want to run into the store with my wife and daughter in the car and the truck running. That's absolutely stupid.

Also, I was under the impression that the vehicle could not be driven if the FOB wasn't within range, even if it was already running. On previous vehicles I've had, if they were running (via remote start) and you attempted to drive off, it would die as soon as you hit the brake to shift out of park.

If you can start the truck, exit the truck, push the lock button and the driver's door NOT lock, and then someone else can come along and hop in the drivers side and drive off, that's ridiculous. I have left the truck running many times in the driveway or in the parking lot, exited and hit the lock button assuming it locked all the doors...

They don't want you to lock the keys in a running car.

Then you should be able to lock the doors with the FOB while it's running.. because if you have the FOB to lock it, then you can use the FOB to unlock it.

Fob is meant to stay in the vehicle anytime the "key" is on.

Huh? So they expect you to enter the vehicle, remove the FOB from your pocket, remove the key from inside the FOB, and then drive away? And then when you get to your destination, replace the key into the FOB, place the FOB into your pocket, and exit the vehicle? Or am I misunderstanding?

I put quotation marks for a reason. By key on I mean the push button pushed. You aren't supposed to leave a running vehicle unattended so the fob would theoretically always be in range
