Could be in this post. Some states it is against the law to leave a running unlocked vehicle unattended. You’re inside the house.

If it gets stolen you also get a ticket.

Oh, I do. But there are those who will always tempt fate and get away with it. People shouldn't steal shit but you should also be doing at least the bare minimum to protect yourself. Can't tell you how many times I've seen cars stolen or vehicles broken into and always hear that the car was unlocked and/or the keys were in it. Hell, one guy even went a step further and thought his manual transmission was a theft deterrent. It's hard to feel sorry for people who won't even do the bare minimum to protect themselves. Also, how people assume they'll be able to keep a 24/7 eye on their stuff just baffles me.

My work pickup is a 2023 Nissan Frontier, and you can lock the door with the fob while the engine's running. Why Toyota won't let you do this without using the manual key baffles me.

Perhaps it's a software or patent issue. I had a 1998 mustang which wouldn't allow this but a 2002 caravan which did.

Unlikely. It's probably just some dumb corporate safety initiative.
