I know on the older FJ that you could ground the gray wire to make the computer think you were in 4low. That way you could lock the rear dif in 2 wheel or 4 wheel hi. I have a 3gen (2018) and was wondering if anyone has done this or knows about it

I done that mod on my 2001 Tacoma, it was handy to be able to lock the rear differential in while in 2wd. I don’t know if it can be done on the 3 gen trucks or not. Maybe someone will chime in that has more knowledge on this.

You can't lock the rear in 2HI or 4HI from the factory. You can mod it to do that, however. Not sure how to do it, but I believe I've heard of guys doing it.

Nope not with the factory locker. You can get an aftermarket locker.

It would probably be a better locker too.

Correct. From what I read 3rd gens are an electro magnet instead of a motor driven actuator. No such mod has been developed yet for them (surprisingly)

    It can be done.
But not “easily” and you eliminate the safety factor for engagement.
If one has the time, the information can be obtained in the link below.
Personally, it’s too much work. I’d wait for a Plug n’ Play development first.

What makes a locker better? Durability? I'm no rock crawler, but every time I've needed the factory one it just works.

The 3rd Gen trucks have a beefier carrier and larger gear set. They now use an 8.8” gear vs the 2nd Gen 8.0”

I have not seen too many busted 8.8” on the 3rd Gens.
I wouldn’t worry about durability. They even changed the the way the locker engages.
The 3rd Gen doesn’t use an electric motor like the previous gens, so you don’t have to worry too much about water destroying the actuator.

I think you’ll be just fine with what you have.

2wd low mod will allow you to engage the locker in 2wd low, in addition to 4wd low.

I've not heard of other options...
