Both. The only difference between the two is you can slip lock in 1st with S mode, cant in D. This may depend on model year.. I've heard that newer models have more TC maps and could be different than older years.

But then it’s unsafe and you don’t have enough power to pull into the traffic, it hesitates too.

It could use a bit more power but I have experienced worse transmissions. I don't really have any complaints about this auto.

2020+ MY's have slip lock in D while in 2nd gear. Prior 3rd gen MY's only as early as 3rd.

    Sarcasm sir, sarcasm. ;)

I drove a couple of 3rd gen autos and they drove great, even though I’m not a fan of AT, obviously.

The AT “issues” are definitely overblown on here. Some folks just don’t like the change, it’s only a 6spd too. Go look at other truck/car forums with 8+ gear transmissions, haha!

TC starts fully locking from 4th gear to 6th.
in 3rd&4th&5th, TC also partially locks. You can see a drop in rpms while TC status stays unlocked (0)

I don't think you understand torque converters and torque converter lock up.

The torque converter is a hydraulic coupling between the engine output and transmission input. Torque converter lock up only means the torque converter itself is locked so the input speed of the transmission matches the output speed of the engine. The gear the transmission is in determines the transmission output speed relative to the transmission input speed but that's all occurring downstream of the torque converter. So the torque converter in lock up doesn't mean 1:1 through the transmission it just means 1:1 through the torque converter. The transmission gear has nothing to do with being able to lock up the torque converter.

If you don’t use OBD fusion or know what ‘lock up status’ is why even bother making a douche post. If you did know anything about it you would understand his question which was worded perfectly.

You can either ignore the thread or follow it and learn something…

Think of the torque converter like a clutch. When it’s locked it’s not making heat, when it’s unlocked it’s slipping and generating heat. Less heat is good for transmissions. The TC only locks in 4th, 5th and 6th whilst cruising I believe.

My 2020 manual no longer mentions using only S4 ECT for towing, just recommends ECT and using S5 and lower in regards for engine braking and charging. The manual actually implies using D and ECT.

When I tow I use S5 without ECT and monitor temps and lockups to decide what gear to be in. Have towed 4,700lb some 5k miles this year and can average 12mpg regularily.

This is one of my dashboards. The green circle behind the gear indicates ‘lock up status’. This was as I peaked a 3,300 ft ascent…

I wish it would stay locked above 58mph but unfortunately doesn’t. 5th unlocks quite easily and temps skyrocket if you’re not paying attention.
I do use 5th a lot for towing but I am very conscious if it’s locked or not. Driving barefooted is really useful when towing, have to be very gentle with that pedal to reap the mpg benefits of a locked tc.

i think you are confused. it doesn't lock up in the low gears, not the high gears.
