Toyota put in a time sensitive anti theft device on mine. At any moment the fuel pump could quit working leaving them stranded on the side of the road. They may be able to get it, but how far is anyones guess. If they do steal it, I will have the last laugh just knowing that someone, somewhere, is going to be walking sometime soon.

You forgot their back will probably be sore in a few minutes because Toyota didn’t install the lift kit for the drivers seat.

Mine falls under the recall, but after reading this thread I may not get the work completed.

Shit. I thought that was covered by the reference to the midget seat.

Does disabling the fob not prevent it from transmitting? I know the drivers door proximity unlock doesn't work until you push the fob button again.

So you're telling me that if my fob is on my counter in my house someone can reach in to pick up the passive signal and steal my shit with it? Hell, I can rarely get the passive unlock to work when I'm standing right next to the MF...

    :notsure:

Yes, turning off the fob does prevent it from transmitting. On the fob used on the Gen3 Tacoma's, turning off the fob is done by holding down the lock button, while simultaneously pressing the unlock button twice. The red led will blink 4 times. Then to unlock the vehicle, press any key to turn the fob back on.

With my truck the fob doesn’t work when you are around 10-12 feet away from it. There seems to be no possible way to steal a signal from a distance farther than that.

I could be wrong but that is my own findings.

Read the links I attached on page 1 of this thread. They have videos of actual thefts occurring, using this technique.

It's been happening in Europe for ~10 years. It became a thing in Canada in the last 5 years, and is now hitting the U.S. in the last couple of years. It's only going to get worse. Much worse.

The manufacturers of these keyless devices have previously acknowledged this security flaw, but are still not fixing it.

Do I understand this correctly? This only applies to Tacos with remote start, right? I have no fob, I have a key.

Holy gawd, this is scary. Is Toyota aware and are they doing anything about it?

I believe it’s keyless entry and keyless start.
