This has been a thing for a few years. They can also find your signal by carrying it in a bag, wait for your fob to send out the signal is does every few seconds, capture it amplify it and send it to a buddy in the parking lot.

A note from the manual about the smart key. Page 132; 3-2. Opening, closing and locking the doors

Effective range (areas within which the electronic key is detected)

■When locking or unlocking the doors The system can be operated when the electronic key is within about 2.3 ft. (0.7 m) either of the outside front door handles. (Only the door detecting the key can be operated.)

When starting the engine or changing engine switch modes The system can be operated when the electronic key is inside the vehicle.
So the range of the proximity signal from the key is 2-3 feet. As long as the key is not 2-3 feet of the exterior of the building, they should not be able to pick it up and relay.

Another note, you can turn off the smart key function. Page 564, under Smart key system. WHen turned off, that the car wont be emitting the proximity signal and cannot be unlocked with proximity signal. So the problem solved.

Well, that's about the size of it. I'd still rather have to have the fob plus the key to start the truck. The Accord I drive now is both. I had a local locksmith make up a new key last month for the Accord. We got to talking and the locksmith said Hondas being frequently stolen is more for the older models and by having a key/fob combination, the odds of the car being stolen now are almost zero. This is somewhat reassuring coming from a locksmith.

But living in an apartment like a do, I could see a crook having a field day hacking into people's cars.

Looking at 2018 Tacoma manual - page 653 - function: Smart Key System, Default Setting: On, Customized setting: Off, Only circle (option) in column 3 - This setting can only be changed by a Toyota Dealer.

Don't forget the glare from that non-functional hood scoop.. Sounds like a hunk of garbage to me.

Oh, and I forgot that it gets bad gas mileage, the weak fan at your feet, the lack of tailgate security, recalls, shitty rear view camera, the hood doesn’t have struts -just some POS prop rod, the paint is thin, the speakers weigh 1 oz. , doesn’t come with Raptor lights, the radio reboots randomly, the passenger door doesn’t have keyless entry, the navigation sucks, it leans to the drivers side, the back is higher than the front of the truck, it doesn’t have ditch lights or a RTT, the bumpers are made of plastic, the bed is made of plastic and a bunch of other stuff that I’m forgetting. All of these things should be enough security against theft.

Does your car have proximity unlock? (This is the no buttons pushed just walk up and open the door handle to unlock)
Does your car have push button start? (again using key proximity to interior to allow push button start)

If the answer to both questions is 'Yes', your vehicle can be driven away using this attack. If you are vulnerable a minor bit of habit training can keep you safe. On a Toyota, holding the lock button on the fob while pressing unlock twice will result in the red light on the fob flashing 4 times. That flash is confirming your fob is on standby mode and will not transmit without button push. You can verify this by putting the fob in standby and trying to use the proximity unlock (it shouldn't work). To take the fob out of standby just push lock or unlock (panic might work also). Just train yourself to put your fob in standby when you are in a vulnerable location, it really becomes automatic.

The hardware to pull this attack off is not expensive and I believe this will become much more common. If I were criminally inclined I would use this for parting out vehicles. The attack will work to start a truck and drive away. It won't start the truck a second time from the original attack. This means someone has to be reprograming the vehicle to a new key or bypassing the push to start lock (or just drive it to a private place and ebay off some unserialized parts).

I also own a Mustang GT and its talked about heavily on that forum, people swear by placing their fobs in a Faraday holder. It had been talked about using the Faraday when it home, maybe it needs to be used now in purses (for our wives) or pockets.

Agree or just turn off the fob when not in use. Seems simple to me? :notsure:
